I have a projected assignment to "The Old Guard" and just want to know anyones thoughts on it. What should I expect? Is it a good or bad assignment? To be honest I have never really heard of it and expected it to be just inf guys. I am a 91B. I pumped to get the assignment just havent heard to much about it or what I would be doing.

SSG Graves, many have the misconception that the 'Old Guard' is 'just infantry' and only does 'guard duty at Arlington'.  Although their duties at Arlington are important and the most visible one of their missions, they are a fully manned and fully deployable unit.  They often deploy in support of contingency operations throughout the world on every continent.  I recently had the pleasure of visiting with one of their companies as they trained here at APG for an upcoming deployment to OEF.

I'm actually a little jealous; the Old Guard was my dream assignment when I was enlisted . . . then I found out about the height requirement.  A sad day for a short Irishman. LOL

Thats what I keep hearing is that I got it because of my height although I would like to think its not just because of that! Thanks for the input!

There a lot of different things to do at the old guard from commander and chiefs guard (cinc) to drill team to being Part Of the funeral part of things which consist of casket teams to firing parties and Cason which ride horses and of course the tomb of the unknown soldier

My friend SSG Len Horton a 6 footer just came from the guard in 1973. We bowled together on the Fort Carson team. He averaged 185. I was a little better at 188. Henry gonzalez, who turned pro was averaging 190+. Lenny was how do you say it strack. Clean as a dime.

SSG Graves, thanks for posting this question.  FYI, we have ~100 members on RallyPoint who are currently assigned to The Old Guard.  I strongly recommend connecting with some of them here via the site to discuss the unit and prep for transition there, etc.  Please let me know if I can help any further.  Thanks!

Below is the link to the unit page of The Old Guard.

TOG ( The old guard) was the best unit I have been in. I was there for almost 6 years 4 of them serving at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I am also a 91b and when I was there Motorpool ops was on the back burner to ceremonys. TOG has so much to offer plus you get to run to DC for pt. I sure you will like it. My family wants to go back, when we just wanted to get out the house we went to DC and just walked around . Hopefully I will get a chance to go back.
