To those of you who smoke, what do you do with your cigarette butts when you are driving, now that ashtrays are no longer standard?

The largest fire in Kansas history is still burning and the acreage is in miles, more than half the size of the state of Rhode Island. There are burn bans, ranchers/ farmers are losing everything and volunteer firefighters from innumerable counties and states have responded. The damage can be seen by satellite.

Maj Kim Patterson Good question Ma'am. Even when there were ashtrays, some smokers would flick them out the window.

You can buy an ashtray that fits a cup holder for a buck at the dollar store.

I remember when there were cigarette lighters and ash trays in the car. For those who didn't flick their butts out the window, never fear, they'd dump the full ash tray and it would fly everywhere. Guess they thought it was safe but could care less about the mess.

When I was a smoker (quit 30 years ago) I carried an empty soda can with some water in a cup holder. Now, I have all my loose change in the ashtray.

Out here in the country, we see a lot of fires started with one butt. You can tell the cause from the scorch marks. As SGT Pesz said, you can buy an ashtray that fits in the cup holder. I wish more folks would use them!

Glad I'm not the only one bothered by the fact that smokers tend to get away with littering (which in some cases, as the article states, can lead to wild fires). I have never smoked, but grew up in a household full of smokers - which led to me hating to be around it. I have no issue with people who choose to smoke, as it's the right - but stop the madness with the littering.

I suppose the question, is did this fire start from a cigarette? Last I remember Kansas would do farm field. I remember driving north on I-35 and there were warning signs to tell people to slow down when entering smoke. Lightning could have caused it also. To answer your question I usually use a can. My state catches on fire like this every year.
