Whether it's called Battle Fatigue, Shell Shock or whatever it is a part of serving in war time.
My wife's uncle was a belly gunner in WW2 and returned with severe mental issues. With VA care he was able to live a fairly normal life and even had a job with the Post Office. He never married.
I think there may have been a lot more support back then because there were so many veterans. Almost 12 million people served during that war and a few million more during the Korean actions, Today veterans don't even make up 1% of the population. Every election there are fewer veterans in Congress and when did we have a veteran as president last who actually served? (I don't count GW Bush because it was used as a get out of trouble card.) In spite of the sympathy shown by the civilians there is a certain detachment from us. There is also contempt. Too many think military service is beneath their dignity. Others think we are a bunch of ineducable morons. I heard this from the mouth of my own son. Northerners like to blame the Conservative politics of those of us in the South and West. ROTC is practically dead in the Northeast.
I don't buy all the sympathy and meal buying. I detest being thanked for my service. It all seems contrived and fake. For some it is guilt.
I'm not too impressed with VA. I don't use it because I've always had health insurance and still do now with Medicare and Medigap policies. Let the VA take care of those who have a real need.
Are our present day warriors being as well cared for as were our WW2 veterans? It doesn't seem so.
