CPL Dave Hoover . I was quite different to most. I would take the usual like pork and beans, (jerky that I kept on me),peanut butter, etc... But , I would also take sardines, pigs feet etc, because most everyone would leave it alone.... LOL . So I had plenty for me..

Funny story.
Young paratrooper putting on his ruck after a jump on Sicily DZ, BN CSM sees that his ruck is very heavy, being summer time it shouldn't have been that heavy.
So CSM tells him to drop his ruck and open it, he start pulling out a half pound cans of ravioli and other can good.
The CSM puts a few in his ruck and says the magic words.

Depends on the timeframe. In the 90's, it was ramen noodles with cans of tuna. In the early 2000's, it was that and protein bars followed by granola packets.

Small camp espresso maker (in the 80s no less), sardines, a couple cans of chili, horehound candies (most people don't like em). With all my military issue gear I still made room in my ALICE pack for up to 10 days worth of real world foods. Even a single burner white gas stove for the colder months.

Ramon noodles, in 74 the others in the platoon always said, "Why you eat that shit?" If they only knew that today it's a big seller, we could have been rich. Lol

In 73 on the DMZ Korea, we all ate ramon noodles in the barracks, it was to cold to go to the mess hall which was half a mile away, and you had to walk. Oh yeah, a case of noodles with 24 packs cost only $2.75 in Moonsani village.

Potted meat, saltines, sunflower seeds, and jerky. A man could survive some time with that and it fit perfect in the pack and easy to eat on the "road".

Many times it depended on climate and what kind of field exercise I was doing. Lots of marching? I liked to carry jolly ranchers. The sugar and fruit helped with the one foot in front of the other for miles on end. Beef Jerky, trail mix, electrolyte tabs for the canteen/camelbak. Usually nothing that required prep or cooking. We had MREs for that.

As an officer, I took the last draw, unless someone senior was around. So I always carried Dijon and wasabi mustard in the field. The two combined can make skunk butt pass for food, ...if required.

I always took the individual boxes of cereal because we had Cooks in our unit and so had MKTs they made hot meals I'd take the milk and save them for later in my cooler

I carried a small denim bag made out of a pant leg with the end sewn up. In the bag I carried raw or smoked Almonds, raisins and either Beef or Turkey Jerky. It beat the heck out of C-Rats!

First of all, what the hell are "T rations". Now not wanting to live by "C" rats alone, food stuffs such as canned hams, peanut butter, jam, bread, pigs feet, canned tuna, chicken spread and canned vegetables, were just some of the items we'd take along. Not to mention cokes and long life milk. Why fight constipation for who knows how long when a variety will keep you regular. I've eaten "C" rats, LRRP rats, MREs, British Compo rations and fresh caught rabbits, a ong other wild life. Oreos, candy bars, potao chips, Fritos, and variuos nuts. Ir you brave and smart enought to hide one or two , 96 quart coolers. Don't suffer the blahzey foods of mad scientists in Mass. Eat like you're on a picnic!
