With all my military issue gear I still made room in my ALICE pack for up to 10 days worth of real world foods. Even a single burner white gas stove for the colder months. Lots of marching? I liked to carry jolly ranchers. The sugar and fruit helped with the one foot in front of the other for miles on end. Beef Jerky, trail mix, electrolyte tabs for the canteen/camelbak. Usually nothing that required prep or cooking. We had MREs for that.
