As far as candidates who support things such as veteran benefits, most GOP candidates claim to have veteran's interests in mind. This shouldn't be confused with candidates who want to expand the military in general. It's my experience that military expansion is usually a rallying cry that candidates use to attract the military vote. When you appeal to the military voter you are not just attracting soldiers, you are also attracting their friends, family, etc. The issue that I find most concerning is that candidates claim to want to "expand the military" while also expressing a desire to "cut social spending". What voters often overlook when they hear this that organizations such as Veterans Affairs are considered social spending. Personally, I feel that taking care of the guys who have served and need help/ assistance is more important than expanding the size of a military that can be inefficient at times. I love the military and will continue to serve as long as they will have me. In contrast it is important to see through platforms that contradict themselves. Let me know if you get any in depth information regarding specific candidates that may not be mainstream. Veteran's issues are important because they are part of the cost of war- especially prolonged and seemingly endless war. I think one party (hardly a veteran among em) is delighted with the thought of maintaining perpetual war to enrich the military industrial complex. Then they want to abandon those who gave a measure of blood and flesh for it. Unacceptable. The American public needs to know that if war mongering is going to be the way we use our precious resource of youth- then there are BIG costs associated. They need to know that military service, and combat in general CHANGES a person. I can effect their productivity over a lifetime. It can leave parent-less children. It can lead to the loss of funds for things they feel are important for their daily lives- such as roads, bridges, rail projects, other public works projects that will improve ALL our lives and provide good jobs for the veterans who are finally home. There are plenty of infrastructure jobs that could rebuild the middle class and improve our country to the point we will be in line with the rest of the first world in public infrastructure.

Instead of looking for a candidate who will continue to perpetually spend OBSCENE numbers of dollars on very expensive weapons upgrades and standing armies we do not really need for the defense of the homeland- why don't we switch gears and look for a candidate that is more interested in Joe on the street having quality living for his family? Better infrastructure would support better maneuverability and logistics SHOULD there be an attack on the homeland. Better educated youth will produce a higher quality cadre of scientists and engineers to innovate and create. As you can see- these changes would influence a better defense in the long run by just investing in our PEOPLE.

There is so much further I can say in this subject, but I won't. Cpl Glynis Sakowicz did an excellent job of explaining selfless service that the military is known for; and how we can’t look at our own selfish needs when we look at the overall health of our country.

I like Cruz because I see him playing by the rules (our constitution) and being a person to make difficult choices for the overall good of our country. Our country needs to reaffirm what “Rights” are, and what “entitlements” are… and that entitlements are OK as long as we can afford them. When we can’t pay for the entitlements they have to be eliminated or our country goes bankrupt, or we become a socialist/communist country like most of the rest of the world, and look where their standard of living is. The federal government is assuming too much power from the states that they are not allowed to (even with the states permission), congress isn’t stopping it, and the courts aren’t stopping it. It’s not going to end pretty.

Let’s critique the exercise: Trump may, or may not be a good business man, but he’s a loose cannon and we don’t know where he’ll lead. Everyone in the military understands Clinton should be in jail for her handling of classified material. Sanders can’t take the Oath of Office because he “shouldn’t” take an oath to protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States. Rubio’s stance on immigration is appalling: Make no mistake about it, all the immigrants going into Europe right now is the largest successful invasion since World War 2. If we don’t get a handle on all the illegals in our country, get them out, and then allow immigration to occur under the current laws that protect our country, we will then lose our country. Currently all political sides choose not to enforce our immigration laws for their own selfish purposes, that’s why the process isn’t working, not because it’s broke. Virtually all the other candidates are in bed with big business and/or special interest groups… thus the saying: politics make strange bedfellows.

It’s been years since I went on a rant like this, I don’t know why I did now, but I do feel better. This is a loaded question-particularly for those who are still in the military and are not allowed to freely speak their political views-lest they get in trouble with their superiors. I do not mention whom I will support, since I have made that and other views of mine known elsewhere. I will ask you though what do you feel is the purpose of the military-particularly the US Navy? Do you feel a true sense of patriotism for this country? Do you like the challenges of being a US Sailor? How do you feel about the current operations tempo of the Navy? How is/was the morale with the unit you were stationed (with)?
The Navy, along with the other service branches has had catchy slogans in order to attract quality recruits. Our current one-"a global force for good," implies that we will act not necessarily for the benefit of the United States but as a world police-force if the situation calls for it. Was this what our Navy was created for in 1797?
I joined back in 1988, the last year of Regan's term in office. Back then we had a total of about 560+ ships. By the time I left the Navy after my first hitch, we launched the USS Arleigh Burke and the USS Wasp, both were part of the next generation of warships that would take us into the next millennium. Skip ahead a few years and the fleet that once safe-guarded the world was now a mere shell of itself. Our aircraft carriers were being used to ferry troops while our sailors were going into inner-city ghettos to help the needy. Also during this time, terrorism was becoming a major concern but our leadership continued to ignore its rise. We found out painfully on Sept, 11, 2001, the price of complacency and neglect. The Cold War may have ended on that date but it was replaced by terrorists threatening to return the world to the Dark Ages.
The next 8 years were spent hunting Al Qaeda world-wide in conjunction with other nations who had an interest in seeing terrorism destroyed. Al Qaeda was whittled down and near defeat when a new administration took over. Since that time, Al Qaeda has rebuilt, rearmed, spread. As ruthless and cunning as they are, a new are more fearsome enemy has taken hold in the Middle East.
Yet our leaders still ignore the danger that is now within our own borders.
This very brief history lesson sums up my feelings for our military. I have seen it at its greatest, when the military was held in high esteem and people eagerly joined the ranks to serve. I have seen it when it was ignored by many and treated with contempt by others.
I want someone who understands what the purpose of our military is for. Someone who will resist the social engineering of our military. Ultimately our military is the first-line guardian of our Constitution. We took the oath (as did everyone who ever ran for public office) to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Neither can't wait to get the chance to spend your tax dollars. Sanders has never held a decent job in his life until he became Mayor of Burlington in 1981 serving for eight years.
