The most impressive and memorable military monument I have physically seen is Trafalgar Square in London COL Mikel J. Burroughs which I have seen several times.
The most somber monument I have seen is the Vietnam Veterans Wall.
Spending four long years as a cadet at West Point I saw many monuments on a regular basis from the Revolutionary War through WWII with majority from the 19th century. The scenery there is beautiful and each monument serves to remind the thoughtful of heroic acts from times gone by.
Each of civil war battlefields from Gettysburg, through Antietam to Fredericksburg which has a cemetery and monuments to the regiments which fought there impacts me whenever I see it. As an infantryman with a good imagination the fact that men walked into withering fire from 60 caliber bullets and cannonballs and grapeshot at times gives me pause to remember what they were fighting for. Unity of government, freedom for all men, and most dear to their hearts there fellow soldiers.

The 54th MA in Boston is one of my favorites. It was done by famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens who also did Lincoln in Chicago, and Gen. Sherman and Adm. Farragut in New York.

It makes me solemn knowing these fine American men are on an eternal patrol. They are stuck in time and place, never allowed to rest.

I am a military history buff thus I will illuminate some Korean War History. General MacArthur was managing the Korean War from Japan but mismanaged the generals. MacArthur had a pet MG who had no experience as a Division Commander nor was he a combat commander. This MG acted like a Corps Commander and pissed off the real Division Commanders. General Matthew Ridgeway eventually replaced MacArthur.

Ridgeway had a photographic memory and was purported to have the ability to memorize 5,000 names of the soldiers he met. He immediately went to the front to conduct a recon and conducted a map recon and memorized the important terrain features the divisions would face during a counterattack. In the process the general ordered better rations and winter uniforms. Ridgeway talked to his Division Commanders. If they seemed reluctant to go on the offense, then he replaced them immediately. Ridgeway wanted fighting generals. He used his memory to keep his divisions on line as they attacked north. He routed the Chinese and N Koreans and was stopped at the 38th parallel. General Ridgeway is considered the general that saved the Korean War.

General Ridgeway was a soldier's general as he went to the front often. I believe he was the CG of the 82nd in Europe. He made his first jump without training. He was also known for receiving indirect but pissing in the direction of the German artillery.

Mustang 22 was a Nevada ARNG CH-47D that was shot down by a RPG in Afghanistan in 2005. 5 crew members were killed.

Sir, this memorial is in front of 25th ID HQ in Hawaii. It is a tribute to all the fallen warriors of the division. As I walk by this everyday, I often wonder what the soldiers were thinking if they were alive.

This is a monument I found on one of my road trips in Thailand. This is apart of a temple complex dedicated to all the Thai soldiers who lost their lives fighting the Maoist insurgency in the north-east of Thailand, and the current insurgency in the far south of Thailand.

The Lion of Lucerne - This memorial is located in the town of Lucerne, Switzerland. It is a very moving monument, the mortally wounded lion's expression is one of agony as he lays on top of the crest of the French monarchy, the inscription beneath him tells the story the one above him refers to the Swiss Guardsmen who were killed. The Latin translation says, “To the loyalty and courage of the Swiss.” The Swiss Guardsmen came to the aid of the French monarchy and gave their lives trying to protect and to give them time to escape during the French Revolution. Over 600 were killed during the battle, the ones that survived the battle were killed when they returned to their barracks by revolutionaries, an additional 100 died in prison.

This is the Submarine memorial located in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. This memorial is a monument to the submarines and submarinars who served during WWII. Each granite stone contains a picture of the submarine and the names of those lost that "went off the scopes" were never heard from again. The list of officers and crew are "on eternal patrol" There are 52 stones representing the 52 submarines that did not come home. I took this picture from the deck of the USS Bowfin, which made it home and is now on display at this site.

Near Dauchau, Germany is the site of the Dauchau concentration camp. There you will find these plaques. Memorials to the men and women who either gave their lives in the war effort or were the liberators of the concentration camp.

The USS Oklahoma Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i. The number of men lost on the USS Oklahoma is second only to the number of men lost on the USS Arizona. The USS Oklahoma Memorial honors the 429 men who lost their lives aboard the Oklahoma on December 7th, 1941. Each white pylon represents one man.

This is the only memorial in the world dedicated to the United States Navy Seals. It is located just outside of Ft. Pierce, FL. The names of all Underwater Demolition Team members—the "Frogmen" of World War II and modern Navy SEALs—who have died in the service of the country are carved into black, granite panels on the walls surrounding the sculpture and its reflecting pool.

"Unconditional surrender" This 26ft tall statue is located in Sarasota, FL.. It was commissioned to celebrate the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of World War II on V-J Day.
“The presence of this sculpture prompts viewers to never forget the “Greatest Generation” or the day when they demonstrated their unity — Aug. 14, 1945,” a plaque on the site says.

I know this is a little late, but I was organizing my pictures and found these. These are the monuments atop of Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima. They commemorate the famous flag raising, and the lost Service Members from both Japan and the United States. I had the honor and privilege to attend a Remembrance Ceremony on Iwo Jima in 2012.

I came across this monument still looked after the residents of Ozark, AR on the grounds of the Franklin County Court House. The monument is to Lt. Col. W.H. Fayth (William H.) of the 4th Arkansas Cavalry. On the stone it says that Fayth was killed 4 miles South of Ozark on June 23, 1864. He was 26 years old. Doing a little research I found Lt. Col. Fayth was a hard fighting officer who had served with distinction at the Battle of Marks Mill and elsewhere during the Red River Campaign earlier in 1864. His death took place as Confederate cavalry forces were sweeping north across Arkansas.

2 separate monuments within a mile of each other commemorating the 1st BN 167th Infantry Regiment, "4th Alabama" of the Alabama Army National Guard, which has a very rich history.

The 167 saw action in the following conflicts:
• Seminole Indian Wars
• Seven Pines
• Second Manasscus
• Antietam
• Gettysburg
• The Wilderness
• The Punitive Expedition (engaged Pancho Villa's bandits on the Mexican border)
• The Civil war
• World War I (fought in 5 major campaigns)
• World War II (fought in the Pacific in the Battle of the Philippines)
• Operation Iraqi Freedom
• Operation Enduring Freedom

Their motto of "Signa Inferemus" means "we shall drive forward", and during every engagement, they held true to that motto.

Having served as a member of the 167 Infantry, I had no ideas these monuments existed to display our pride in the middle of downtown Birmingham, one at the VAMC, the other on an overpass where people drive and walk by every day.

I find it is so significant to me because, while many pass it every day, most fail to recognize it.

To me it symbolizes the recognition of our Veterans and soldiers in today's society.

While they see it on the news or just hear about it, they go by it so fast that they fail to notice that is anything but a "program".

When they meet a soldier and they talk to them, the Veteran becomes more than a program, he is real.

These monuments depict decades of honorable service to our Nation, and yet they go unrecognized by and large, much like some (not all) civilians look at us.

U.S. Navy WWII Submarine Memorial in Groton Connecticut ..My uncle James's sub the Seawolf went down in October 3, 1944 in the Philippine Sea.. He left behind a wife and one son who he never saw

Post-war examination of Japanese records shows no attack listed that could account for the loss of Seawolf. While it is possible Seawolf was lost to an operational casualty or as a result of an unrecorded enemy attack, it is more likely she was sunk by friendly fire. 83 officers and men as well as 17 Army passengers were lost. She was the thirty-fourth U.S. submarine lost in the Pacific War, the second (after Dorado in the Caribbean) to friendly fire.[13] One of the Army passengers was Captain Howell S. Kopp, an Alamo Scout. Kopp was en route to an undisclosed location in the Philippines to conduct a clandestine mission in support of the upcoming allied landing on Leyte.[14][15]

On 28 December 1944, Seawolf was declared overdue from patrol and presumed lost. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 20 January 1945.

I was never involved in a war/operation/campaign/conflict. I pray I will never have to be. However, these monuments stand as poignant testaments to the ultimate price of the freedoms, rights, and privileges so many take for granted. These effigies serve as a constant reminder that the blood of countless fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters, was and continues to be shed, and lives were lost, to maintain the society, culture, and way of life as we know it. No, I may not have participated in anything grand or heroic, but I give my unwavering respect to those who have and who still carry the heavy burden of scars seen and unseen. My service was uneventful but honorable, and it is my hope that during that time, I touched a fellow servicemember in a positive way.

It's not really a monument, but in a way it is to me.

I was deployed 1995 - 96 in support of OJE, sitting on a bridge over the Sava River manning Cowboy TOC.
One day we had a crew from the museum in Zuponja, Croatia come to our TOC, they wanted to document things. MAJ Casper, our OIC was giving an interview to the group leader through a translator. I, the NCOIC was talking to another person through a translator. We were giving our day to day live, workings of the bridge crossing operation. After the interview was over, I was standing in front of the TOC chatting to my translator. I ask her how she felt about NATO being there, she replied:
"At least for the next year(at that point it was only a 1 year man date) we can live as people. We can enjoy a summer coffee, plant our gardens with out the threat of snipers shooting at us. We can take evening walks and enjoy life - at least for one more year."
I tell you this almost put this 11B to tears. I never thought about this before, it was just a deployment to me. Now it was personal, a connection and it took a whole new light.
My only after thought was - I am so glad my family will never have to live like this.
I had great respect for the people there and the lives they led.
I am including a pic of our TOC on the end of the bridge over the Sava River. I'm sure those who crossed will remember.

Some of the really nice ones I saw were actually for Russian soldiers in and around Moscow and St Petersburg. I will have to see if I have pictures anywhere. I have always liked the Aircraft that are mounted and dedicated outside of most USAF bases as well.

I finally found my pic. It's one most of you will never see as it is here in Denmark. It is to a Flying Fortress named, "Stormy Weather" and it's crew which crash landed on the island of Als. The crew bailed out with the pilot and co-pilot crash landing - all survived the rest of the war in a POW camp. This memorial was erected by the Danes to honor this crew for what they did.

Not truly a "military monument," and it means many things to many people....

The United States Flag is ultimately my favorite. It's our symbol known the world over. It represents is and we represent it. It's a symbol of our extension and might. It is a reminder to all Service Members that we serve for some reason greater than ourselves. It's a reminder of where we originated as a Country. And it is a reminder of the sacrifices of all Service Members, past, present, and eternally.

Great pictures...for me this was memorable (Marine Corps War Memorial) as I saw inscribed in the marble where I served (Somalia). The other was at Camp Murray, WA (JBLM) with the Minuteman in Seahawks jersey...

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture but participated in a memorial service like the picture above. We have all witnessed up-turned M16 rifles, dog tags , helmet and boots to last a lifetime. We need the monuments and memorials to remind those after us what sacrifice really is.

I like the vietnam memorial in Frankfort KY, it is a sun dial and there is a brick for every soldier who died from the state with their name. On the day they died and the time that was given the dial cast a shadow on that soldiers brick.

Some mean more to others. This is one I helped build at NRMC Camp Pendleton. The artist, Raul Avina, was a Marine and felt strongly that the Corpsmen on Iwo Jima didn't have the recognition they deserved. So, I did the base and structural design and Raul did the figures in his garage. We did a monolithic concrete pour with steel mounts in the correct location. A crane and some welder time and the figures were in place. Additional work by Raul on the surface textures, add a plaque, and voila, a monument. The third picture is Raul on the ground when he realized the last weld was done and his figures were locked into place. A bit later, Raul made me a personal gift of a small figure of a CEC Officer using a transit out of the same "pourstone" material he made the monument out of. One of these days, I'll have to go back and see if it's still there.

I haven't seen them all, and can't find any pictures, but hard to beat the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Gettysburg as a whole, is also amazing, although it is a single monument. Going through that battlefield I couldn't escape the feeling that I was going to be in the middle of the Little Round Top fight.

I dont have the pic, but there is a museum next to Buckingham Palace and the exhibit for the American revolution basically is a tribute to how well our ancestors treated members of that unit when they were EPWs.

Not a lot of people will ever see this monument in person. It's installed on the grounds of the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (formerly the grounds of the American Embassy, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam). It was conceived by former members of the 1975 Marine Security Guard Detachment (led by Doug Potratz who undertook a significant amount of the work that was involved in making it happen) and was dedicated on 30 April 2015 on the 40th anniversary of the evacuation. The picture with the current MSG detachment was taken on 30 April 2016. Special tip of the cap to the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Ted Osius, and former Consul General, Rena Bitter, for their support of the project.

Here are two: One is a tribute to General George Patton and is located at the Patton Museum at Chiriaco Summit along I-10 east of Indio in California. The other is a monument to the Arizona Confederate soldiers who fought for the constitutional right of self-government. The monument is located in Wesley Bolin Plaza at the state capitol in Phoenix.

My favorite....ooops that's right , the memorial to my fallen fellow aviators and crew members , 4000 plus ,that were killed in Viet Nam has not been erected because it has been blocked over and over by the Army. Often called the helicopter war credited with over 90,000 rescues , a simple monument proposed and paid for by VHPA cannot be erected. Welcome home again! Right.

I recommend two Monuments: Monument to the Battle of San Jacinto, 18 minutes that profoundly changed the history of the United States and the world. The tallest masonry monument in the world, completed in the 1930s. Monument to HMS Jervis Bay, Armed Merchant Cruiser, sunk in 1940. Before the war, Jervis Bay was a civilian cargo/passenger steamer. With the addition of WW I surplus she was converted into a warship. In late 1940, she was the sole escort of a convoy headed for England when they were attacked by a modern German pocket-battleship. Captain Ferguson, commander of Jervis Bay and the convoy, gave the order for the ships to scatter, then turned to engage the German. Though there was no doubt how the action would end, Ferguson continued his charge, taking repeated hits while his guns were to far away to reply. The jarvis Bay was sunk, but her amazing attack so occupied the Germans that 36 of the convoy's ships made it to port. Captain Feruson was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, here's a memorial that is little seen due to its remote location, and thus, has faded into virtual obscurity. It's the Ernie Pyle Memorial on the island of Ie Shima (Iejima) northwest of Okinawa Island. Pyle was a "Pulitzer Prize–winning American journalist. As a roving correspondent for the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain, he earned wide acclaim of his accounts of ordinary American soldiers during World War II." The inscription reads simply: "AT THIS SPOT THE 77th INFANTRY DIVISION LOST A BUDDY ERNIE PYLE 18 APRIL 1945." The photo is of my father (to the right) and was taken between 7AUG45 and 16AUG45. Sp4 Byron Skinner No picture, there is really only a National Parks sign identifying the spot but its where Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson was killed by pickets form North Carolina. I realize that in a hundred and fifty years the course of the river and the geography has changed some but the current spot meets the described identification given by witnesses of the time. For the documents and the story it is rather clear that the much un-liked General form Virginia and former instructor of math and artillery at VMI was in fact was assassinated buy his own troops. The undisputed evidence is rather clear. During day light hours a party on horseback that included General Jackson and 10 others, l know the number varies of the number of mounted Confederate officers, passed through a picket spot on a river bank. Jackson identified himself and told the Lt. in charge of the pickets that they would be returning after dark from their reconnaissance. From Jacksons testimony before he died and that of the Lt. it was clear the message was understood. The Lt. said that there had been Union activity in the area earlier, before they fired on the Jackson Reconn, but that is a rather lame excuse. Union records have no mention of contact by Union troops and the Confederate picket that night. Of course on the return trip General Jackson suffered a fatal wound and all of the others in the party were either killed or wounded according to most accounts of the incident. Just standing and walking around the area it is clear to see that Jacksons return couldn't have been missed and the written investigation says that the Lt. OIC know of the return. But all men from the picket fired on the men on horse back at a range of about 25-30 feet.

Regardless of which monument you think is best, there is a book documenting the monuments from the Vietnam War, titled, "Warriors Remembered", by Retired US Army Colonel Albert Nahas. He fought in the Vietnam War and spent his own time and money traveling all 50 states to make the book. It is truly an inspiration.

I do not have a Best Military Monument that I have seen. I have not seen very many traveling throughout the United States and abroad, however, I had the honor of witnessing the ceremonial Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetary. It was a memorable experience as well as an emotional experience for me as it was during my retirement transition that I witnessed such a time honored tradition. I encourage everyone in all branches of service to visit and witness this Military Tradition atleast once during their career.

These are our Veterans Memorials from our little town of Cripple Creek, Colorado. The newest installation are memorial markers with 18 names on a side, year by year, for fallen soldiers with ties to the area who died in combat, as recent as Iraq and Afghanistan. With fewer than 1500 residents between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor, that's a lot of names. We are kinda patriotic around here.

Beirut Memorial-I have visited many great ones, and this one is among my favorites. It is located outside the gate of Camp Gilbert H. Johnson, a sub post of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Others that are on my favorite list is the Korean War Veterans Memorial, The Marine Corps War Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

This is one section of a Memorial Mural in Gallup, NM honoring the Navajo Code Talkers service in WWII in the United States Marine Corps. An initial group of 29 Navajo volunteers ended up exceeding over 400 in number. The Japanese were never able to crack the code and this contributed to the success of the war in the Pacific. August 14th each year is celebrated as "National Navajo Code Talkers Day".

There are numerous great images of the Korean War Veterans Memorial on this site. Sometimes overlooked are the haunting images etched in the granite wall which provides an appropriate backdrop to the sculptures. The reflections of the stainless steel sculptures on this wall creates an amazing image by pulling the free standing sculptures and the granite wall together for a lasting silent tribute to those who served in the Korean War.

At Gettysburg, the statue of Father William Corby, Chaplain of the Irish Brigade as he blesses the soldiers of the Brigade as they prepare to attack on the second day (2 July) of the battle. The brigade then went into the Wheatfield. The Irish Brigade consisted of 3 NY Regiments; 63rd, 69th, 88th and the 28th Massachusetts and 116th Pennsylvania. The statue was erected in 1910 and it was the first non-general statue placed on the battlefield. The statue stands on the same granite stone that Fr. Corby stood on in 1863. Father Corby later went on to serve 2 separate terms as the president of the University of Notre Dame.

Col Mike: I had responded to this question before by replying that sadly mine had not been erected. Hopefully, I will not get myself into too much muck asking for the following assistance. During Viet Nam countless lives were saved. Dustoff/Medevac is what it today. The helo still plays a major role in any combat operation. So it is sad that there is no national monument honoring the 5000 plus aviators and crew members who gave their all. The Viet Nam Helicopter Assn as well Gold Star Families are working to remedy this. To the point. This memorial to Father Emil J. Kapaun is located outside the post chapel in Kapaun Barracks- Kaiserslautern, Germany. Father Kapaun (Captain) was serving with the 8th Cavalry Regiment during the Korean War when he was taken prisoner. He died while a POW insuring that his fellow POWs received physical comforts to his own deprivation. Of course he also provided the spiritual comfort needed under the harshest of conditions. In 2013 he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Korea. A book about Chaplain Kapaun 'A Shepherd In Combat Boots' by William Maher has been published.

14th Quartermaster Detachment, Greensburg, PA-Today, 25 February is the 26th anniversary of the Scud missile attack on the unit at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in 1991. The unit which had been in country only 6 days lost 13 soldiers in the attack. It suffered the greatest number of casualties (killed and wounded) of any allied unit during Operation Desert Storm. The monument is located on the grounds of the Army Reserve center in Greensburg, PA.

Cottontail Park in Manduria Italy, base of the 450th Bomb Group dedicated to the men of the 450th and built as a park for the children of the town and a memorial to the airmen who served there. Built with donations from the airmen and their family's thru the purchase of trees with memorial plaques on them. This is my dads plaque and his plane.

As we approach St. Patrick's Day I think it appropriate to highlight the New York Irish Brigade Monument at Gettysburg. This monument pays tribute to the 3 New York Regiments of the Irish Brigade; the 63rd, the 69th ("Fighting 69th") and the 88th. The dog at the foot of the Celtic Cross is an Irish Wolfhound. Colonel Patrick Kelly, a native of Co. Galway commanded the brigade at Gettysburg in July 1863. The brigade suffered heavy casualties while distinguishing itself in the Wheatfield. The monument was sculpted in 1888 by R. O'Donovan. He was native of Ireland and fought at Gettysburg under the Confederate Flag. There were 2 other regiments in the Irish Brigade at Gettysburg, the 116th Pennsylvania and the 28th Massachusetts. There are monuments to those 2 regiments on the Gettysburg battlefield.

Traveling with camera at the ready gives one the opportunity to capture images with historical significance. While traveling in Ireland in 2006 I came across this monument to Myles Keogh who was with Custer at The Little Big Horn. Keogh was a native of Leighlin (Leighlinbridge), County Carlow. As an Irish soldier he served in the Papal Army in Italy and then coming to America answered the call of the Union Army and served with distinction. He was with General John Buford at Gettysburg and was awarded a brevet rank of Major due to his actions and leadership during the battle. He later attained the brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At The Little Big Horn he commanded Company I of the U.S. 7th Cavalry (Garryowen).

USS Juneau-CL 52. Located at the dock in Juneau, Alaska this monument memorializes the 680 sailors who lost their lives on 13 November 1942 during the naval battle of Guadalcanal. The Juneau was hit twice by enemy torpedoes, the second hit causing it to disintegrate. There were only 10 survivors. Among the lost were the five Sullivan brothers.

As we are about to mark the 100th anniversary of America's entry into WWI, this monument to Joyce Kilmer-soldier, patriot and poet reminds us of just a small part of our treasure that was lost during that war. Kilmer was killed in action on 30 July 1918 in France while a member of New York's 42nd Rainbow Division. His regiment was the "Fighting 69th" later re-designated the 165th Infantry Regiment. This monument, located in South Park, a suburban public park near Pittsburgh, PA was erected in the mid 1930's.

"Rendered in cast bronze with green patina, the American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial in Battery Park depicts the stranded seafarers of the torpedoed S.S. Muskogee as they balance atop a sinking lifeboat. A desperate seafarer, hands cupped around his mouth, shouts into the void. Another leans over the side of the boat, arm outstretched, not quite grasping the hand of a companion still in the water. Torso submerged, his head alternately sinks below and rises above the water line as the tide ebbs and flows. Loosely based on a photograph taken by the captain of the German U-boat that sank the Muskogee in 1942, the American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial captures the last moments of these men’s lives. Monument in honor of Father Francis Patrick Duffy located at Duffy Square in Times Square, New York City. Father Duffy was the chaplain of New York's 69th Regiment ( 'Fighting 69th'). It is written that Father Duffy often was in the front lines and would accompany litter bearers into the thick of battle to recover wounded soldiers. He is the most highly decorated cleric in the history of the U.S. Army. April 6th will mark the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into 'The Great War'.

I believe that the service should figure it out that once as part of your career once you hit 8 years you get a four day paid to visit the invasion of Normandy and the taking of the hedge rows.

Located at the battle site a few miles south of Dragoon, AZ, this simple monument attests to sacrifice of four Confederate soldiers killed in action against the Chiricahua Apaches on 5 May 1862. These are the only Confederates killed in action in what is now Arizona. They were buried where they fell and the graves are still extant. The Arizona Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans maintains the graves.

On 5 May 1862, a Confederate foraging party was camped at the Dragoon Springs Stage Station (located a few miles south of the present day town of Dragoon, AZ). They were rounding up stray cattle and horses to provision the garrison at Tucson. Chiricahua Apache warriors attacked, killed four troopers and made off with the horses and cattle. The four were buried where they fell and their graves are to this day maintained by the Arizona Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. This simple marker commemorates this battle.

One hundred years ago today the United States Congress declared war on the German Empire after President Woodrow Wilson had asked for a special joint session of congress on April 2nd. Our "Dough Boys" went over there and proved to be the key in the armistice signed on November 11, 1918. Dough Boy monuments to our heroes were erected all over the country. Above are two of them. This is the Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge, atop Hill 145 in France. I visited there in October 2016 and was just amazed at how large it was. April 9 was the 100th Anniversary of this battle,where many say that Canada became a nation that day. On July 1 of this year, we will celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. So, yes, it is an important year for us. Below, are some of the shots I took with my iphone as my Nikon's battery had died.

On the left the unexploded munitions warning and the memorial in the background. In the middle. The Figure of Canada overlooks the tomb. She is facing out over the ridge in the direction of the advancing German army. On the left is the memorial from the road. The wall at the base records the names of the fallen that circumvent it.

Lake in Yukon Canada named after U.S. Army Lieutenant. Schwatka Lake, located in Whitehorse, Yukon was named after Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka who surveyed the entire length of the Yukon River by raft in 1883. Just one of the many little known accomplishments of the United States Military.

This is the Memorial Tower at the American Military Cemetery at Margraten, the Netherlands and a couple of other shots. It's a very peaceful, out of the way place, but every Memorial Day is full of Dutch civilians who remember the Americans who rescued them from the German occupation. The Queen (now the King) often participates, an Army unit and band always represents, and it is a very large ceremony every year. Quite a tribute to these heroes!

I am looking at having one made for a Ft. Hood soldier (there during the shooting) was medically retired and later succeeded suicide. Awaiting price quote, but you will love the statue of The Forgotten Soldier. I an keeping this on the down-low right now, because his father is terminally ill and I plan on driving the statue to this soldier's home state and cemetery. I will be working with a few VFW posts and asking others for contributions after I get the quote.

I have been impressed by many of our military monuments, but The one that really stood out was the sandbox mockup inside Checkpoint Charlie of the Berlin Wall and the American sector. I was with 3 other officers on a "slow " day in Dec 1973 when we visited the wall. We went inside the checkpoint to the mockup for a briefing before climbing the stairs to one of the wooden observation platforms and then then eventually crossing over to the Russian sector for a walk.

I have 2 favorites. The WW2 Memorial and The Viet Nam Veteran's Memorial AKA The Wall. The 1st because these warriors of the 2nd WW were able to come together as a nation united in a common purpose; defeating fascism and protecting freedom. Without these patriots, we would not exist today. 2nd is the Viet Nam memorial because it's minimalism lends somber gravity to every name that is etched in it's face, a tangible and approachable piece of our American heritage and of our never forgetting our battles that fell. I also like that it was a Vietnamese immigrant with a Nat. Endowment For the arts grant who conceived and designed it. That speaks of America many voices and cultures and that we are still a sanctuary for those that will accept freedoms hand.

Liberation is a bronze Holocaust memorial created by the sculptor Nathan Rapoport, located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, in Hudson County, New Jersey. This is a memorial to the American liberators of the concentration camps. To me there was no greater cause in WII.

I had two uncles who served with the Marine Corps (a chaplain and a Corpsman) so the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (also called the Iwo Jima Memorial) was very evocative. The monument is just outside Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac river from the Capitol.

I guess I've had several GREAT MILITARY MOMENTS. First when I graduated from Jump School in the 82d Airborne Divisions Jump School back in 1959. My second great military moment was when I completed the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg and received my Green Beret. My next would be when I was the first OCS graduate to cross the graduating platform and receive his diploma wearing the Green Beret and bloused boots. Another great moment would have been when I graduated from the Special Forces Officers Course and was assigned as the XO of an Operational Detachment Alpha in the 12th Special Forces Group Airborne and again in the 7th Special Forces Group Airborne.

The other monuments and statues shown in the various responses are indeed terrific but there are two that are particularly important to me: The USS Arizona memorial because my grandfathers cousin was Captain Franklin Van Valkenburg and captain of the Arizona that fateful day.
The other is Iron Mike located at Ft. Benning.
Mike has inspired me from my earliest days as an Infantry soldier - nearly 50 years.
I cannot look upon this monument without a feeling of immense pride in the rich history of my beloved Infantry.

Honoring 28th U.S. Infantry Regiment for valor at Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918. Cantigny was the first major U.S. offensive of WW I. 28th Infantry adopted the Black Lion from Picardy province coat of arms & ever since have been known as "The Lions of Cantigny." This monument was dedicated at Cantigny several years ago. A similar one is at First Division Museum at Cantigny Park near Chicago.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Pittsburgh is the largest memorial in the United States dedicated solely to honoring all branches of military veterans and service personnel. Dedicated in 1910 it was built to honor Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Veterans. The museum houses rare and one of a kind exhibits that span the many wars and conflicts our nation's military have participated in. Since 1963 more than 600 area heroes have been inducted into the Hall of Valor. Members of the Hall of valor are recipients of the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross and Silver Star among others. The Hall also has a venue for banquets meetings and concerts. It is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Here's an impressive one in former communist East Berlin, Germany. The Garden of Remembrance in Treptow Park where the Soviet Army buried thousands of its Soldiers killed during the Battle of Berlin, spring 1945. There are a number of statues, the largest of which (in background) depicts a Soviet Soldier holding a German child on his shoulder while slicing a swastika in half with a sword. Much of the material used in creating this monument was taken from the ruins of Hitler's chancellery.

This is in the military science building at Kansas State University. It's the photos of all the KSU students and alumni KIA or MIA during WW1. There was a research project done on the 48 men that traced their history through the war and which battles they fought in that goes with this as well. It was very interesting to listen to and read about. Several of the officers there were among the first in the 1st ID and in France.

This is considered the most important military monument of our time. It was a gift from Russia to the United States along with a pledge from Putin to fight together against terrorism. Just outside NSA HQ, as part of the National Cryptologic Museum (Open to the public https://www.nsa.gov/about/cryptologic-heritage/museum/) is an area called "National Vigilance Park." It contains a USAF C-130A aircraft, an Army RU-8D Seminole, and a Navy EA-3B Ranger. All three represent aircraft that were shot down or lost with all crew members aboard while conducting reconnaissance missions. Can I assume we are not just talking about ours. There are many nations that have some very moving war monuments. The one that really sticks with me was actually a Soviet one. While I was stationed in Berlin we went to East Berlin several times. There was a Monument for all the fallen Soviet soldiers from the battle of Berlin. So many that they could not be taken home to be buried. So they brought in train car loads of Russian Soil to bury them in. I don't have any pictures of it. Not sure if it is even taken care of anymore since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

There are so many Memorials of note, first and unquestionably the Tomb of the Unknown. However, there is one memorial in DC which I considered misplaced, as though looked upon as an "afterthought." The Memorial to the Nurses of the Vietnam War. Sadly placed deep in the wood beyond the Vietnam Memorial it is as though someone said "Well I suppose we should remember them!"

To me that Memorial is worthy of repositioning to the front of the Wall, opposite to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue. If it were not for those Nurses and the Combat Medics, there are many whom, to this day, would not have survived.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - My favorite military monument is Shiloh National Military Park and Cemetery. I am a member of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW) with three lineal ancestors (great-grandfathers) and two collateral ancestors (great-uncles) who all volunteered to serve during that era. There are 3,584 Union dead interred at Shiloh National Cemetery; 2,359 of them are Unknowns. Through documentation, I have proven that one of my third great-grandfathers, SGT Andrew P. Webster (1812-1862), was killed at the Battle of Shiloh and is buried beneath one of the Unknown grave markers in the cemetery. There are also several mass Confederate graves throughout the park.

Chaplains Hill in Section 2 at Arlington National Cemetery, we donated the Jewish Chaplains monument in 2011. This fall we will installing a new Protestant Chaplains Monument which will carry over names of 117 chaplains KIA during WWII, with 25 names of Chaplains lost in service Korea thru Post 9-11.

I would say all the statues they removed in NewOrleans.My parents would take us sight seeing and we thought it was amazing to see these statues.I can't post a picture of them because someone thought these statues of Veterans were racist and offensive.They were also vandalized.It's funny how we got a new VA facility in a city were veterans are not welcomed.Well you say these were civil war soldiers,nope they are veterans our laws say so.

I have seen several monuments thru out my life. Pearl Harbor with both the Arizona Memorial and the Missiouri, the start and the finish of WWII. I have also seen the monuments in Solomon Islands for both the Americans and the Japanese and I was moved and thankful for the men and women who served both in Europe and the Pacific.
When I was stationed overseas in West Germany, they took us to the border facing either East Germany or Czech. We have to put our hands behind our back. We could not point at something in the distance because it could be said that it would be a international incident. I saw the land across the border and was thankful that I was free.
I am from Mobile, AL, 2 items I would still visit, the fort on Dauphin Island and the USS Alabama, WWII battleship. We need to remember our history, both good and bad or we will forget.

This is a monument from a allies concentration camps for axis P.O.W.'s during WW 2. for years only locals knew their was ever a concentration camp in the area there are three building that still stand, two guard shacks, and a tower, most of the other buildings were re-purposed by the people that purchased the land. it about 7 miles from my home, in a little Oklahoma town called Tonkawa on a side road north of highway 60, to the east to a transformer recycling center.

I hate to come across as a Doubting Thomas, but are there actually going to be any monuments at all to admire -- five years from now? The groups destroying the statues have scored victory after victory, and the Americans have scored none. There appears to be no government support for the keeping of these monuments.

On a personal note, I very much like and wish to keep the statues and monuments.

I had the honor of having the quote from Pericles I suggested engraved on the front of this monument at Rose Barracks in Vilseck, Germany. It is a memorial to the fallen Dragoons of the 2d Cavalry Regiment from the Gulf War. Unfortunately the monument was destroyed recently (August 2017, pictures 2-3) during a freak storm. The last photo from July 2011 shows me on the left with the father of the fallen trooper who's name is the first one above our heads. He was the first 2d Dragoon killed in Afghanistan and I attended his funeral one year almost to the day prior to that picture being taken.

There is a special relationship between Hospital Corpsmen and Marines. The Hospital Corps supplies medical support to Marine infantry units. Prior to serving with the Marine Corps, Corpsmen attend Field Medical Service School, an intensive program of combat infantry training similar to boot-camp. They are then deployed for service with Marine Corps units of the FMF (Fleet Marine Force).

Went to DC with the Honor Flight this month with veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. Whirlwind one-day trip but saw the war memorials, Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Lincoln Memorial, and driving tour of DC. Spending time with the soldiers who carried the torch before me was a wonderful experience. They paved the way. Our WWII vets are dying at a high rate now, which is why the program has expanded to include more conflicts. I went with Queen City Honor Flight out of Charlotte. Check your local state chapters, go if you can.

The Lone Sailor Memorial at Vista Point, Sausalito, CA.
The plaque at the steps of the Memorial reads: “The Lone Sailor – This is a Memorial to everyone who ever sailed out the Golden Gate in the Service of their Country – in the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine.

A ship heading for sea passes directly by this spot at the northern end of the Golden Gate. Here the Sailor feels the first long roll of the sea, the beginning of the endless horizon that leads to the Far Pacific.

There is one last chance to look back at the City of San Francisco, shining on its hills, one last chance to look back at the coastline of the United States, one last chance to look back at home.

Built to honor the American and French soldiers and sailors who won the decisive victory against British forces under Lord Cornwallis. I live about 5 miles away, so I see this beautiful monument quite often.

Located at the point where 1st Corp Commander GEN Longstreet CSA, ordered Gen Pickett, CSA and his Divison from Virginia forward. The Division was decemated on the hights of Cemetary Ridge in what history records “Pickets Charge” Battle of Gettysburg.

A 'monumental story'. This monument to the fallen stands in front of Crawford County, PA Courthouse in Meadville, PA. This part of the monument lists the names of area residents who perished in WWII.

I think the best I've ever seen is the Marine Corps. memorial in D.C. of the flag raising on Mount Surabachi, Iowo Jima. Of course the photo is not the memorial but the actual event.

The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA...19 young men from Bedford, then population around 3,000) died died in the first minutes of the D-Day landings. Colonel, my being a Navy man, the most humbling monument that I have ever seen and visited is the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor!! It always brought a tear to my eyes when passing it!!

Tribute to the Cavalry - Hand-painted wall art (approx 8’ x 6’) done on cinderblock around the mid/late ‘80’s by a civilian prisoner on work detail at AASF #2, Knoxville,TN. The painting was destroyed when building renovations were made some 20 years later.

In the city of Arlington, VA, there are quite a few. In my opinion, its ANC. While stationed there, i saw so many more monuments within those hollowed grounds that the general public doesn't generally see. Many have seen the Kennedy site and the Tomb of the unknown Soldier, but there are even more monuments that a lot of people are not aware of, that have significant places in history. So yeah, ANC by far!!

That is a difficult question. I can say that here are two The Flag raising at Iwo Jima and the Wall (Vietnam) One shows the heroism, the other, shows a commitment, regardless of political interests.

The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Bedford has the sad distinction of having lost the most sons on the beach during D-Day. It was all started by a very persistent woman and is well worth the drive.

Bar none, the Vietnam Memorial near Angel Fire, NM is the best VN memorial I’ve seen. It was started by Dr. Victor Westphall to honor his son Marine LT David Wetpahall who along with 16 other Marines were killed in an ambush near Con Thien on 22 May 68. He later dedicated it to all who had fallen in VN. The first part was dedicated in 1971. I believe it was the first major memorial to the dead of Vietnam. It is a beautiful chapel that is designed as part of an angel’s wings welcoming the VN KIA. This was originally paid for by Dr. Westphall and his friends. An interesting part of the story was that Dr. Westphall started finding pictures and notes from relatives of men and women who had died in Vietnam or as a result of wounds from VN. He started a walk with the pictures along the sides leading into the chapel. It is now run by the New Mexico Department of Veteran Affairs. I would recommend any veteran of any war or their relatives visit this amazing site. I visited the site just before I went to VN but unfortunately didn’t take any pictures.

Guam's "Asan Beach Park", Where Guam celebrates our Liberation Day with flags placed at the park every year. US Marines landing location, to liberate Guam from the Japanese 21 July 1944. The US Forces had 3,055 casualties, and on Guam, we will never forget their sacrifice. Salute!

In the National Cemetery, at the Shiloh National Battlefield, there is posted along the walking path a 6 stanza poem befitting of the honored fallen from any time. I'm going to post stanzas 1 and 6:
"The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo,
No more on life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few.
....
On fame's eternal camping ground,
Their silent tents are spread,
And glory guards with solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead."

Monument to the "Four Immortal Chaplains" of the U.S Army Transport SS Dorchester. The Chaplains were among the 442 who perished on 3 February 1943 in the North Atlantic. The monument is located in the plaza at the Veterans Memorial Center in Brevard County, FL.

Two monuments in this image. The battleship is the USS Massachusetts berthed at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. In the background is the Braga Bridge. which carries Interstate 195 and connects Somerset, MA & Fall Rive MA over the Taunton Rive. The bridge is officially the Charles M. Braga Jr Memorial Bridge. The bridge memorializes Charles Braga who was the first resident of Fall River, MA who was killed during WWII. He died while a member of the crew of the USS Pennsylvania during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
