Winters was ALWAYS Hockey, and summer was Soccer for the first 12 years, then 1 year lacrosse, then a combination of golfing and hockey camps. I have a lot of fond memories during those times. Made a lot of friends, broke a lot of hearts. It was the time when Dad would buy a case of soda pop (orange crush, grape nehi were two of our favorites) in the bottles. The only time of the year we got soda pop. The swimming pool was full ( yea we had one, but we weren't rich.) It was filled with an artisan spring we had on the ranch, so the water was always clear and cool. Mom would mix up some homemade ice cream, it was mine and my brother's job to turn the crank and freeze it (don't forget to keep the water hole open or the ice cream would taste salty). It was fried chicken (freshly killed the day before), new peas and potatoes. We usually ate outside on the picnic table. Later on towards evening we'd drive into Caldwell and watch the fireworks. When I was small it was at the old rodeo grounds down town, but then later it was moved out to Simplot stadium. What a fantastic memory. Bathing in cool streams, sleeping in the trail shelters and chasing bears away from the food cache hung in trees, making sassafras tea, the smell of the campfire, treating the feet of the younger boys in our scout troop who weren't used to hiking, and the laughter of the other boys as they teased each other like they always do. Quiet! So quiet at late at night. Just thinking about this makes my heart warm!
