What can my son expect for advanced promotion in the AF?

My son joined the Airforce and has 27 college credits. The recruiter told him he will get promoted after basic. I have read that he could have went in as a E2. I would like some thoughts?

Update! I spoke with the recruiter this morning. He looked up my sons contact and he is listed as an E2. He will get his rank after basic! Thank you all who replied.

Now if he'd have joined the army he might have even made E-3 or E-4 while in basic. I'm sure he'll be happy with the Air Force it'll just take him longer to make rank.

If it's not in his contract; he may be Simply Out of Luck (SOL).
In the Army though, E2 is an automatic promotion after 6 months. While I have limited experience with the Air Force I am guessing they have a similar automatic promotion time line.

Correct promotions in Junior Enlisted Tier are all automatic. You do have the opportunity to compete and be awarded E4 early.
