That same day President Andrew Johnson vetoed the bill that authorized military trial for those accused of "depriving Negroes of the Civil Rights." This was 5 years to the day after Jefferson Davis appoints his Cabinet including fire eater Robert Toombs (State), Christopher Memminger (Treasury), LeRoy Pope Walker (War), Judah P. Benjamin (Attorney-General) and J. H. Reagan (Postmaster-General).<br />This must have added insult to injury to many freedmen and their supporters.
