On February 23, 1862 union forces occupied the town to hold in against the south and to protect the citizens. The union forces held the town until February 26, 1862. They were ordered to withdraw against the judgement of Brigadier General Samuel Curtis who wanted to provide protection to the citizens of the town because they were loyal to the union.<br /><a target="_blank" href="http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=6642">http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=6642</a> <div class="pta-link-card answers-template-image type-default"> <div class="pta-link-card-picture"> <img src="https://d26horl2n8pviu.cloudfront.net/link_data_pictures/images/000/044/063/qrc/blank.gif?1456250412"> </div> <div class="pta-link-card-content"> <p class="pta-link-card-title"> <a target="blank" href="http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=6642"> Occupation of Fayetteville (February 23รข26, 1862) - Encyclopedia of Arkansas</a> </p> <p class="pta-link-card-description">Third Illinois Cavalry, Third Iowa Cavalry, Portions of the First, Fourth, and Fifth Missouri Cavalry, First Missouri Flying Battery (US); Two unidentified companies (CS)</p> </div> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> Response by LTC Stephen F. made Feb 23 at 2016 1:04 PM 2016-02-23T13:04:51-05:00 2016-02-23T13:04:51-05:00 SGT John " Mac " McConnell 1326171 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Thanks for sharing <a class="dark-link bold-link" role="profile-hover" data-qtip-container="body" data-id="563704" data-source-page-controller="question_response_contents" href="/profiles/563704-11a-infantry-officer">LTC Stephen F.</a> Response by SGT John " Mac " McConnell made Feb 23 at 2016 8:29 PM 2016-02-23T20:29:35-05:00 2016-02-23T20:29:35-05:00 SGT Tom Schmidt 1327666 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>although the slave issue is embedded throughout the social climate of the USA, the war was about state rights. right or wrong, we all lost the war. did you know that NYC tried to abstain from the conflict?
