What is, in your opinion, the most iconic fighter aircraft ?

In my opinion it is the F-15 Eagle, the P45D Mustang, and the SR-71 blackbird.

Iconic.... for me, that would be the F4U Corsair. Many, MANY decades ago, it was the most deadly thing in the air in the South Pacific. Sure, the aircraft are faster, carry more weapons, and are probably safer to fly, but those birds are just beautiful with their gull wing design, and the roar of their rotary engines...

I vote for the P51 Mustang. Most effective fighter on all fronts. And good looking too.

BTW the Blackbird was unable to function as a fighter aircraft as it flew faster then any ordnance available at the time. It would have run into its own bullets and/or missiles.

For myself, I would say the most iconic fighter aircraft could be either the F4U Corsair, P-51 or the Hawker Hurricane.

Whenever I hear fighter aircraft, I think of the Corsairs and Mustangs.

Similar category as to what's the best foreign food. But for me, anything with a Merlin in it. That would be Spitfires and Mustangs. The "sound" could also be heard in Lancaster and Mosquito bombers. They still made variants up to 1950. Second place would go to anything with the later Allisons, e.g. P38G.

I worked on the SR-71, TR-1 and U-2 projects at RAF Mildenhall. There is nothing like watching the Blackbird take off. The rumble goes deep into your body!
