What is the likelihood of being issued crappy gear in the Active Army Infantry (the vests, magazines, rifles, helmets/straps, MOLLE gear)?

Better than average. Your assigned weapon will have been manhandled by MANY people prior to you. As for your OCIE (vest, ruck, etc.,), you will probably get all new gear.

I would have to say it could happen. If did you take right to the supply and say that you would like better and let your chain of command know what happening.

Of all conventional line MOS' 11B are the best equipped along with most 19Ds and 68W. I got issued Oakley sunglasses on my first deployment. It all comes down to what unit though. If its a heavily rotated unit you'll usually have better stuff.

There is Civ crappy
Army crappy
Marine Corps crappy
or Air Force Crappy (which means it was issued and not in the original plastic bag)

Never got "crappy" gear. Even as a PVT outside basic/ AIT (having been breifed by Dad ) if my CIF gear wasn't serviceable I didn't accept it. Didn't make many friends at CIF but didn't have stuff that wasn't serviceable.

Over the past 16 years I’ve spent a small fortune buying better gear than what I’ve been issued. On the positive side, it’s mine to keep and my issued gear is in exactly the same condition as it was when they issued it to me.

It's simple, you see potential private, if you don't want it then don't sign for it. Tell your Squad leader, Plt Sgt and your 1SG that the great wasn't to your satisfaction and that you deserve better gear. It's that simple.

Depends on your unit. Some units have a higher priority for getting the newest gear.
