Instead of going for cover we continued the ceremony while rounds landed around the COP. Granted we all know reenlistment ceremonies are not long and we was already reciting the Oath of Enlistment at this point. A former student just finished her second hitch in the Navy and wanted to do the ceremony at the school in front of her extended family. I got permission to do a full student body assembly and arranged for a huge flag to hang in the gym. The band would play a march and the National Anthem, the kids would see a “career” moment of an alumni...we’re talking full dog and pony!

Then a storm came through and knocked out power to our district. No school.

But the ceremony still happened with just her, her family, me, a couple of custodians, and the school superintendent. And the ginormous flag. I’ve never seen her family so proud. Yep, it’s all about the one who is signing their name yet again.
