Ive been doing so fo 36 years starting as a cubscout. The woods has always fascinated me, the smells, trees, bugs, fauna and wildlife. Weather doesnt hold me back. Though lately due to a temporary back issue ive been limited to walks at home or in town on the river walk. Walking is also a favorite nightly thing for me.
My haunts now a days is the Pine Mountain Trail in Ga. When the dollars are available, parts of the AT or the Talledega NF in Alabama to name a few. Short trip to FlatRock park can be fun as well but is usually too populated. My adventures usually involve a camelback, snack a book and my pipe (tobacco). Ill usually have one of my kids with me but when in the mood our 5 person family will go any where between 3 to 10 miles . Weve done more though on backpacking trips. My truck is plastered with stickers of our adventures. My wife and I started taking our kids out weeks old camping. Then, when wife was ready take them out in the Kelty Trek. We started them out early and they know the rules of the woods along with survival techniques.
The simplicity and naturalness of the woods to me is better than any beer, food, bath, museum etc that relaxes other people.
You could hike the same trail over and over again and pick out or hear something new.
If able to go back in time, id love to go on an adventure with John Muir.
As the sayings go on two of my favorite out door outfitter shirts,
"Up a Mountain, Down a Beer"(Mountain Chalet, COS CO)
"Life is Good" SGT(P) Harry Clyde Jr. Wed, 21 Jan 2015 16:55:37 -0500 2015-01-21T16:55:37-05:00 Response by MSG Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 21 at 2015 6:30 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-is-your-unofficial-or-self-prescribed-therapy?n=429482&urlhash=429482

Great question. My therapists noticed a HUGE shift in character when I started lessons. When riding, I have to focus on constantly communicating with a 1200lb animal. I have been kayaking in the past but I was never "hell bent" on getting one. Plus I live in Houston, so the places to go are limited, or so I thought. It took me until about three weeks ago to finally get out on it, and it was great. The first time I went I was alone and I just followed the river without having to do much rowing. I normally like and do more extreme types of sports, but this was great. I came across a lot of wildlife, a couple barriers I had to overcome, and even flipped on some minor rapids (pretty new to kayaking rapids, and alone). When I flipped, I was calm and collected, even thought I was in snake, snapping turtle, and rebar plagued waters. I managed to get all of my gear back, even my Wiley-X's from my first tour that I found about a quarter of a mile down stream. Since my first time out, after I had to do some minor modifications so I do not lose any gear, I have been with a few friends and family and every time, even in the pouring rain, has been fantastically relaxing and escaping. I should have never told the wife about the snakes and flipping because now she demands I go with a "battle buddy," which proves to be a challenge at times, but I will make it work. I am always up for an overnight trip, a friend and I have it mapped out, and if you are in the Houston area, have a kayak, and want to have a chill time, let me know.
