This actually predates the modern military and was probably a common practice with members of Roger&#39;s Rangers or other like minded folks. Fire beds would fall more under survival situations as opposed to anything tactical, but hey - we&#39;re talking camping, not E &amp; E. A good example (although humorous in this instance) can be found in the movie &quot;Jeremiah Johnson&quot;. In extreme cold weather put your boot opening into the other one and put them under your head as a pillow. It will be enough to keep them from freezing overnight.<br /><br />Long term camping, trench around the tent to direct runoff water away from your tent interior.<br /><br />As a national guardsman...
