I travel to Korea a lot as my family is there. My daughter lives and works in Seoul. My mother-in-law lives in Daegu, but I think of her as my mom. Since you will be half way down the country on the west side, you will need to use the trains to get to Seoul, Daegu, or Buson. I would try to do a weekend at Jeju Island. Its their version of Hawaii sorta. Travel around, its easy. Get a bus pass, and just go out and visit the historical temples, even if its not your thing, there is always other stuff near these tourist traps.

A fun thing to do is learn to read Korean. Its very simple phonetic alphabet. You may not know what it means but reading it will impress the locals. My wife speaks Korean but cant read it. I read it but cant speak it. So we are nice team.

Travel on weekends, don't just sit around on base, it's miserable if you do.
