How many NCOERs get bounced all around and end up with the CSM who has significant issues that need addressing? The SSG who wrote the NCOER usually has multiple layers of red tape between himself and the CSM. We have far too many NCOs (and Officers) who can't write an NCOER for crap. But I think at a Battalion-level, the CSM sitting down with the SSGs and above to teach them how to write bullets, match rater/senior rater comments so they aren't contradictory, what (in the CSM's opinion) constitutes an excellance, promote now, and 1/1, rather than it just getting kicked back by the CSM through multiple iterations of "improvements." I think this is one of the weakest areas for our mid-level leaders. I've made note of this before, but the last 6 months in this job have really shown me a whole lot more as I review NCOERs from around the Army as the primary recruiter for a nominative assignment (USAPAT). It is great to know what you want to say, but it is another thing if you do not know how to put it down on paper and tell others what you think.<br /><br />As far as other things PCCs and PCIs is great. How to create a leaders book and keep it current/how to utilize it. The other things that many NCOs struggle with should be taught to junior enlisted during JETS.<br /><br />JETS topics would be how to put together a promotion packet, how to do counselings, DNC (how to be the leader and conduct it), and how to run a formation for PT and accountability. What about one to show the correct way to use the DA Form 2166-8-1 NCOER Support Form? In my unit, we are required to submit the support forms with the NCOER for review. It has been very helpful. The disadvantage of serving as a Guardsman/Reservist is the NCO development gap. I would like to see my unit build a robust program for our soldiers. They need and deserve the best. We expect the best as leaders, we need to give them our best. I say this because at the company level leaders get so many tasks that could have been stopped at the cuops level. That way details/taskings are not the every day thing. That way leaders can train, lead, teach, conduct PCC and PCI’s and whatever. Also what we need to do is to lower the meetings. I say that to say this. If you’re in meetings as a 1SG and commander then you can’t do your job by helping the company with their functions. I don’t believe that conpany leadership needs to be at every meeting(CUB, BUB, UHPC, command and staff) to ensure information is getting cycled through the chains correctly. Again this is my .002 however, I didn’t go to in-depth on these however, these would be more In the realm of LPD’s and this is what I see in my fox hole.
