What units are the best/low optempo at Fort Hood?

I’m leaving SFAB this Winter and decided to stay at Hood. I’m a 10 year staff sergeant and looking for something a little slower pace. I realize the army doesn’t care what I want but I finally have a choice since that was part of the “deal” coming to SFAB. I’m a 91B and hoping for insight from someone who is currently on/recently left Ft Hood. Thanks.

I wouldnt put much stock in the deal. I just left 2nd SFAB and jad to fight to get one of my top 3. HRC only has to try to match your top 3 with the needs of the Army to fulfill the "deal," but if your top 3 are all filled up or dont meet the Army's mission then you will be SOL.

It’s up and down. I was in 2/12 cab and we did nothing for months then a long gunnery, makeup gunnery, squad lax, NTC, gunnery, FTX, Germany deployment for Gunnery and JMRC back to a long red cycle.

There really isn’t a unit that has a constant low OPTEMPO. Most units it comes and goes in waves, so even if someone on here referred you to an organization, it’s not guaranteed it would stay like that, especially since Ft. Hood is a rapid deployment installation....Without having a challenge in any organization, it could inadvertently set you up for failure, especially if you’re trying to advance in your career. Recommendation: if you’re going to be staying at Hood, try finding a unit that’s balanced.

You need to get assigned to, Garrison, Division or Corp. A SSG should never be looking for less. Hoooah!

I recall being given a choice of assignments when preparing to leave Korea in 1983. I had given some thought to where I wantd to go, my family was from Texas, my children were born there, and I would likely wind up retiring there. After careful consideration, looking out the Window at a rare and deep snowfall in TDC at Camp Casey. I responded to the branch assignment officer, "i've become quiet enthusiastic about winter sports here on this tour." Additionally, the absence of sunlight so much of the year agrees with my complexion since I am prone to sunburn. Please send me to some place I can work on cross country skiing and enjoy long winters." After only a very brief hesitation the branch assignment officer said " I'll send you some place to work on that problem." He sent me to Fort Hood.

If you’re looking for a slower pace, stay away from 1 Cav Sustainment BDE. Particularly 553d CSSB. Op tempo is way too high. If you end up with orders there, run. Haha
