The public high school where I work started having us work on Veterans Day five years ago. The promised Veterans Day activities to bring better awareness to the students, as the kids just see it as a day off. Activities the first year were great, but have become repetitive.

I brought it up to the school, and they agreed that they should do something better, and are very willing to work with the Veteran staff here.

I bring this to the RP community for Phase 2, collect data about what other schools are doing.

My alma mata engages the students with the veterans by hosting a honor ceremony and dinner free for veterans. They also hold a Memorial Day ceremony honoring those who paid the ultimate price.

I will say that’s this years activity. Every year they try to do something different, but it always includes a meal. A couple years ago, it was a bbq at the community lake yard. They sold plates to the community (free for veterans), hosted different information/education speeches and activities to get the community more involved with veterans and bolster pride in community and desire in the younger generation to want to be part of something greater.

MAJ (Join to see), my wife teaches at a public school in our county. Veterans Day is just another day in our schools. I have asked her about any mention of veterans in the classroom on Veterans Day, and she usually replies there is little to no mention.

Veterans Day is not even a day off/holiday for schools in our county. I attribute that to the days the kids get off for Jewish (and other) holidays. The administrators have to decide where to draw the line, and Veterans Day doesn't make the cut.

The "fix" is to take the bull by the horns and insert it into the program/school, as you suggest in your post.

My daughter is participating in JROTC this year, so I'm sure she will hear about Veterans Day this year.

I drove a school bus for years and 1 (I emphasize 1) year they took it off the calendar as a recognized holiday. After a little encouragement from absent Veterans, they reconsidered that idea.

The problem in this country is that Veterans and Memorial Day have become just another day off work to bbq & drunk.
