The one thing that sticks out in my mind, is that Soldiers should not be referred to by their gender or race. We are all Soldiers and that's how we refer to one another.

Boot camp was my first REAL diversity training. Until then, I really didn't have much in the way of diversity.

I remember my drill instructor saying that are are only two colors in the Marine Corps: Light Green and Dark Green. Period.

Other Marines I know have shared this as well. It stuck.

Of course, that little Kumbaya moment didn't keep Dark Green Marines from effing with me in boot camp, but when the dust settled and the fights were over, we finally 'got it'.

Some of my best friends and memories were made with other races - and I'm very glad to have that experience, compliments of my beloved Marine Corps.

The day before graduation, there is family day, the first time you will make contact with your family other then written letters in over 3 months. Our Drill Instructors reminded us of the sweet aromas our sisters, girlfriends, and mothers make and that the parade deck would be overwhelmed with that "sweet smell" due to our super short silkies we would be wearing during the motivational run. Our Drill Instructors then proceeded to tell us that they would be taking all of them to the Drill Instructor hooches, afterwards.

One of my Drill Sergeants, I assume was from the deep south, but she would constantly say things such as

Unfortunately, I had one of the most petty drill sergeants around. He arbitrarily told me that if I didn't eat beef or pork I couldn't eat chicken or fish. There's more to the story but the bottom line is that he was trying to control my food choices just because he could. I'll never forget how petty he seemed to me in that moment. I lost all respect for him in the span of 5 seconds. Unfortunately for him, that wasn't hard because he was an @$$hole besides.

I will never forget 2 days in to basic training I was called in to Senior Drill's office. He got onto the loudspeaker and said, "Princella" please report to Senior Drill's office immediately. Shocked to hear my name called on just the 2nd day of training my heart was thumping out of my chest, I ran and breathlessly reported to his desk.

He sits with his head down and ignores me for at least 5 minutes before even looking into my petrified face -- and holds up a piece of paper I had signed and says, "Are you Princella?" I said, "Yes, Senior Drill." He says, "Wow, what a beautiful name." Then....

He stands up, leans across his desk and looks me straight in the eyes, and yells his head off "Your First Name Is Private!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I betta not ever see another government document you signed without your first name own it - do you hear me PRIVATE!!!!!!!!!"

"Now get out of my office!"

I summarily proceeded to have ten heart attacks and fifty strokes all at the same time! LOL! Never forgot it!

After spending several days in the hospital from recovering form complications of heat exhaustion, I returned to the barracks and my Company Commander (drill sergeant equivalent) said "You are a marginal performer. I should probably revert you....but ....oh go catch up with your company." I tried much harder to not be a marginal performer and determined to be a lifer. If he had reverted me I would likely have washed out.

He wasn't my drill sergeant but I took this away from it anyway. Was a Korean war and 2 time Vetinam vetran Squad leader I had. Had been busted a couple of time for alcohol. SSG Lambert. We where having Birgade inspection and I was freaking out because the Colornel was coming. SSG Lambert looked at me and said" Rank has no influence , why are you afraid of the man, He puts his pants on same way you do. Feet first!" First NCO when I got to my unit to actually teach instead of yelling at the new private. Taught me all kinds of stuff that I try and pass on to my soldiers today.

Had a "it's about to get real moment"

Final road march, full gear, DS yells at us "some of you will not be able to finish this march, and for them we have this van that you can ride in so you don't have to hurt your little private feet. If you want to skip the march, get in the van." A group of about 10 soldiers jogged over to the van and as they got a foot away the DS in the van locked the doors and yelled, "you look fine to me! beat your faces then get back into formation"

the lead DS laughed hysterically as he began to jog (we jogged a good portion of the march).

After graduation you will never again forget to step off on your left foot. To this day I still step off left foot first. Point 2 was that I would never forget the rank structure of the Army and Marines, the Air Force and Navy well that is a different story. I do ok with the officers, but have yet to figure out the enlisted ranks.

There were so many. 16 weeks of 19K OSUT at Ft. Knox. SDS (SFC) Rosen after end of day formation would use "I better see 120 cheetah @$$ motherf---era beating me inside this building. Fall out". He would be standing 3 feet from the DS entrance while we would have to run completely around the building.
DS (SSG) Mitchell would have us on the Red Line while he paced back and forth saying "Remember Privates, I may not be the tallest motherf---er but I'm the baddest. He was 5'4"

Well, when I went into the Navy I already had a TS clearance. (Long story). So in our 2nd week the Company Commander gets in my face screaming "HE IS A SPY!" Because my Secret clearance had already come through. The rest of my boot camp time was him on my case for everything. So much for "lie low".

Oh, and day before graduation he asks everyone "How many think this was hard?" A number of hands went up. "This was the easiest part of your time in the military." long pause "Especially for you stupid f'n NUKES". lol (I was a nuke). (Nuclear trained operator).

For perspective, he was a Senior Chief Signalman with 28 years in. He had done 3 tours in Viet Nam on "river rats". Took shrapnel in the shoulder and was told he would be medically discharged. He wanted the 30 years so asked for other options. They said he could push boots. Yeh. He LOVED that idea. But he did it. We were his first company. But he took no poop off anybody not even the top ranking officers. Great guy.

Out 1st SGT told there were two reasons to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. It had to be on fire and there had to be a big ole bear loose inside. If you don't have both of these at the same time you don't jump out.

At about week 12 or 13 of OSUT at Harmony Church, Ft Benning, GA (A-10-2, 4/87 Inf.), one time during break, a few of us started singing "Lean On Me". The whole company joined in and was clapping to the beat. When we were done Drill Sgt Rogers said, "That was nice. Now get on down and lean on Georgia"!

DS Davenport, not even my drill sergeant. I definitely wanted to be in the Army at this point but one day during combatives he said something to the effect of “you guys think this is bad? Right now there are kids half your age somewhere training every hour of every day for the sole purpose of killing you.”

And he is right. But really thinking about it right then gave me a lot more motivation for what I was doing.

In AIT I weaseled my way into a bottle of liquor from a soldier coming out of the exchange. I got back to the barracks and saw that DS hat coming, so I threw the bottle in the bushes. He found it, of course I denied it. So I guess I’ve got a liquor producing bush, he says. I’ll never forget that line, and the push ups and throwing up

The only thing I remember of quality instead of just being yelled at during basic and AIT is this. Sr. Drill SGT. puts us in the bleachers. While holding up a 7.62 x 39. This is an Ak-47 round it costs 7 cents to make . With about 2 hrs of training a 8-12 year old can kill you with it. So your life is worth about $3.07 . The Army is investing about $30,000 in you. So keep your ass down and perfect your IMT, and the Army expects a return on it's investment. I will never forget that my life is worth so little to the enemy.

This wasn’t said by a drill sergeant but it was said by my old platoon seargeant and I’ll never forget that. “Thompson,you have a good ‘don’t fuck with me’ attitude. And that’s why your gonna be a good leader one day.” SFC McCormick now a 1sgt. When I first got to the unit, I had a lot of problems. We butted heads,he put me up for 2 articles. But near the end before he left,I turned myself around and he spoke nicely of me on my hearings and didn’t get any punishments. He looked me in my eyes after my last hearing and told me “Thompson. I don’t ever talk good about people that I put up for articles,ask LT. But you’ve turned yourself around and I hope you stay in my army.” I give a lot of credits to that man and will always be thankful for him,because of him is why I’m staying in. I’ll be honest. I hated him at first. But he opened my eyes up and now he’s one my favorite leaders. I owe a lot to that man.

We had a DS pull us aside before the M203 range. He told us to be prepared. He declared every cycle one soldier would have his nose busted by the sights. “Happens every time.” After a bloodless uneventful day, the DS picked up the 203, popped a round in the breach, and proceeded to fire. Ironically, he was the only one the busted his nose that day.
