In the DFAC on base my favorite was actually a toss up of the veggie lasagna and the steak. The DFAC actually made a pretty good steak. As for MRE's, I have had many that were good, but none still compare to the old dark brown MRE bag Meal #1 Pork w/ rice in bbq sauce.

Corn beef hash(MRE type), warmed, add grape jelly, crushed crackers and hot sauce. Meal fit for a king.

After a couple of weeks eating mud & sand with a little MRE mixed in, my favorite meal was whatever was available on the mess decks! Shout out to "Cookie" on the USS San Bernardino (LST-1189) and USS Ogden (LPD-9). Best. Chow. Ever.

To be honest, while in Kandahar, it was what we called Alpo and rice. It was those bbq beef cubes in that brown or white rice drowning in what we all thought was grease looking gravy. That stuff was always better then that shitty as bbq brisket that they served. To this day if i smell anything close that i have to run to the bathroom and blow it up.

After the Desert Storm cease fire and re-deployments back to home stations began, the USAF dismantled the field chow hall (tents) at KFIA. In it's place, a new chow hall was installed in modular buildings and run by local contractors. My favorite was the mystery meat stew often served during lunch hours. This stew was heavily curried and served with spiced rice. Dipping a ladle into the stew pot often returned bones of unknown origin. Best guesses were goat, camel, or dog. Whatever it was, it was tasty and filling...and the curry was just hot enough to make your eyeballs sweat...good stuff!

In Viet Nam We often subsisted on C Rations the new lots were from the Korean war, older lots were left over from WWII. They had a long shelf life. I never want to eat another can of C Rats as long as I live !

The best dining hall was 3rd ranger battalion especially steak day. And MREs was franks, beef stew and chicken stew with Tabasco and crackers

No so much a meal, but the chow hall on Arifjan had the best sweet tea. Every time we convoyed I will fill up as many containers as I could of that sweet tea!

Surf and turf in Kabul Afghanistan every Thursday at the DFAC. Never really minded any of the chow that was served. Most of the time it was hot and had a little flavor. What more can you ask for in a deployed location.

Once every few months on the COP, the cooks made Grilled Ham & Cheese sandwiches with a cup of Tomato soup. It was amazing and a significant morale booster for everyone.

They still had C-rations when I was in. Came with a can opener (P-38). Most of them were good, cold or hot.

I must add an amendment. Favorite chow deployed. Al Jaber AB, Kuwait DFAC ('98 - '99). Great food but unless you ordered an Anthony's Pizza 2 weeks out you didn't have any other options for chow. I hate...absolutely hate...vegetable soup. That DFAC had amazing veg soup. Ate it 2x a day for my entire tour in their cheapo ultra thin, gonna shrivel and melt, plastic soup bowls. To this day won't touch veg soup but have found memories of it there.

I was also one of a very few allowed to drive off base. Favorite stops were McDs on the way to Kuwait City, Baskin Robbins in the Ace Hardware store, and DQ on the second floor of the Sears. Doha had fast food joints but getting it back to base before it was cold was an issue. And those dang buzzer alarms if you went over 60mph... I think my hearing loss is from the radios being played to loud to drown it out.

Like I stated before. Air Force. We eat good.

Surf N Turf at Camp Victory was pretty good They did pretty good with the steak considering it sat in a warming tray for several hours before it was served I heard rumors they had lobster at one time but I never saw it we had shrimp.
