In it's place, a new chow hall was installed in modular buildings and run by local contractors. My favorite was the mystery meat stew often served during lunch hours. This stew was heavily curried and served with spiced rice. Dipping a ladle into the stew pot often returned bones of unknown origin. Best guesses were goat, camel, or dog. Whatever it was, it was tasty and filling...and the curry was just hot enough to make your eyeballs sweat...good stuff! Favorite chow deployed. Al Jaber AB, Kuwait DFAC (&#39;98 - &#39;99). Great food but unless you ordered an Anthony&#39;s Pizza 2 weeks out you didn&#39;t have any other options for chow. I hate...absolutely hate...vegetable soup. That DFAC had amazing veg soup. Ate it 2x a day for my entire tour in their cheapo ultra thin, gonna shrivel and melt, plastic soup bowls. To this day won&#39;t touch veg soup but have found memories of it there.<br /><br />I was also one of a very few allowed to drive off base. Favorite stops were McDs on the way to Kuwait City, Baskin Robbins in the Ace Hardware store, and DQ on the second floor of the Sears. Doha had fast food joints but getting it back to base before it was cold was an issue. And those dang buzzer alarms if you went over 60mph... I think my hearing loss is from the radios being played to loud to drown it out.<br /><br />Like I stated before. Air Force.
