I was assigned to both heavy, and light engineer battalions during my service. Was even assigned to the 9th ID for a time. We were supposed to dig tank defolades for them, but I think the higher ups figured out a 13 mph couldn’t keep up with a 60+mph tank, lol. Over all, there are limitless assignments for an equipment operator, and the skill definitely transfers to civilian life. Then I went to fort Stewart, GA for a couple years and the to Hanau, Germany till I rolled a D-7 Cat down a hill a broke my back. Ended my military career but they made me 100% disabled at 25 years old. Good luck, I really wanted to retire but it wasn't in the cards.
