It's the first college course you should take. It will affect every grade you ever receive in your future college courses and it will affect your professional writing and how well people perceive you in your written communications in the future.

There is no shortcut to education. There are no military courses that will double as college courses for you, you have to take college. Taking college now will put you years ahead of your peers in every promotion you have in the future, especially in combat arms. Take English as a Second Language to cover the basics of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. Check with the education center to see if they offer ESL. Good luck in your education efforts! Go to the Education Center and talk with an education counselor about your goals and education objectives. Ask them to check the ACE guide for your MOS, as it may carry college credit. Consider a two pronged. Approach to you civilian education; courses and challenge exams such as the CLEP tests. If you are just starting out, consider taking the CLEP general exams before classes, as you should not duplicate credits earned. Consider completing an Associate degree as part of working your way towards your bachelors degree.

I started my education journey when I was a PFC, earning college credits and promotion points via my MOS, CLEP, and in resident classes, earning my AS degree, which opened the door for a degree and a commission via the predecessor to the green to gold program. Good Luck! All community colleges have assessment tests in these areas, and they are usually free to take. Don't be upset if you place in high school level classes. Most high school students are not reading, writing or doing math at grade level. Discussing how bad high schools are will not achieving anything. Just deal with YOU, accept where you are and take the classes that will help you advance in life. I have seen free apps that can assist with you working self-paced, and these are often the best place to start, depending on your duty schedule and training demands of your Army service. You can get a lot of proficiency by practicing! READ, READ, READ....libraries are full of free books to borrow and return. I used to donate the text books publishers sent me to review to our tutoring center on campus where students can have brand new books for free. Check it out to see if your Education Office or on post community college has anything like that for you. There is lots of stuff out there to get you more professional in your writing, your reading and your ability to solve problems. God bless you in your efforts to better yourself intellectually.
