He enlisted in Army Air Corps as a Private at the beginning of WWII. By the end of the war he had applied to and been accepted as a pilot and had been promoted to Colonel. After the war he stayed in the Air Force Reserve eventually being promoted to Brigadier General. President Reagan promoted him to Major General on the retired rolls in the 1980s.
