Who is your personal military hero?

For me it would have to be my father. I remember when he came home from Vietnam when I was 7. As he was walking through the airport in Kansas City, MO. He was cursed, spit on, called baby killer and all other sorts of vile names. I remember his reaction to all of this. He never lost his military bearing, never spoke, he just looked straight ahead, wrapped his arms around us, gathered his baggage and led us out the door. He is the reason I went into the military. To me he was all that was right with this Country and the World. Rest in Peace dad.

Almost too many to chose. But probably the late DSC recipient MAJ(R) Dick Meadows. At 20 y/o the Army's youngest MSG during the Korean War, Reconnaissance Team leader in Vietnam with 13 prisoner snatches, a HALO pioneer, the first Vietnam War direct commission to CPT, Assault Force Commander at Son-Tay, and as a civilian led reconnaissance efforts in Tehran prior to EAGLE CLAW. Yet, as he was dying he regretted that he hadn't done enough.
"We're Americans. Keep your heads down. We're Americans. Get on the floor. This is a rescue. We'll be in your cells in a minute."

Mine would be my grandfather who served with the U S Army Air Force/8th Air Force/2nd Air Division/14th Bomb Wing/492nd Bomb Group (Heavy). He was a navigator on a B-24 Liberator during WWII. We were called out this past year because he was quite ill. Family was gathered around him singing Wild Blue Yonder as he slipped away. The Air Force rendered the military honors at the funeral. My boys and I represented the Army in ASUs. The local VFW was kind enough to send out their team to fire the volleys. I know he would have been very proud that day. I really miss my hero.

My Grandfather, without hesitation. He was in Japan when they dropped the nuclear bombs and even witnessed the mushroom cloud of Nagasaki, somewhere in the whole mess managing to attain a purple heart that he never shared the story of. He was a strong and good person who I still do my best to live up to everyday.

My Grandfather; Stanley Merell Kuhn on the right in both photos.
He served somewhere in WW2 and came back a quiet man with many stories, he then moved off grid at the age of 55 and left everyone behind. He would come back to civilization on a Sunday just to visit family once a month or so.
He stayed until he could no longer be alone at the age of 80, living off the land, eating wild and growing his own food...he was and still is my total hero in everything he was as a person, father, grandfather and human being.

My grandfather, sometime during WWII, it wasn't until I returned from Germany in 1993, that I discovered he began his career as a tanker on the M-10 Tank Destroyer in 1942, at some point during WWII or shortly afterwards he became Field Artillery and left the service in either '54 or '55 after serving in the Korean War. He passed away in 1974 at 49-years old so I never had the chance to talk to him about his service and learn from him. He is the primary reason behind my 26-year career. RIP MSG Bill E. Spangler.

MAJ Private RallyPoint Member, that would be my father, LTJG Jack Curlee, U.S. Navy, 1JUL43-23JUN46. He spent a good part his time in the service as the engineering officer aboard U.S.S. LST 78 in the Pacific Ocean. He's still alive and kicking and will be 93 years old in March!

To me a "hero" is someone that pushes you to be better. To not just settle for good but to strive for excellent. A hero is your internal compass when you are lost. With that in mind, my heros are these two little people. These two mini people are what push me everyday. They do not let me except "good". And when I'm feeling out of it, a simple smile from them brings me back to zero.

My hero(s) are every soldier I knew and deployed with. Combat deployments. Their faces are too many to post on here. Those who malingered, purposely popped hot on UA tests so they wouldn't deploy, and a few other quitters are not on that list of Heroes.

This guy is my Uncle. He was an officer and pilot in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 11 Air Medals, etc, wtc . He was one of the most decorated pilots in the area of Waverly, NY. The American Legion is named after him and the Sherman Tank is dedicated to him.

I wish I had a picture on my phone of my late grandfather. A paratrooper from the Vietnam war along with my late cousin who was KIA in Veitnam in 1970. My grandfather meant a lot to me, he passed in 2008 and miss him everyday. He was the last to join the military in my family until I joined last summer. I do have a few pics of a memorial my small village has for veterans from there

My personal hero is Medal of Honor Recipient SFC (RET) Ronald E. Rosser. He helped establish the professional Forward Observer MOS for the US Army through his actions during Korea and subsequent term of service until he was retired from the US Army.

I met him during the Skyball XII event held in Dallas, Texas Oct 2014. It was an Honor and Privilege to talk with this Great American and share stories. Thank SFC Rosser for your undying love for this Country and God Bless!

He led Merrill’s Marauders to fight the Japanese along the Burma Road. The units flash was later adopted by Ranger Regiment. Lessons learned about leading Soldiers during extreme fluctuations in weather and terrain, with little sleep, shortage of food and in an austere environment lead the foundation of Ranger School, many of the things that make Ranger School a Run/march/climb/swim of missary where inspired by the experiences of Merrill’s Marauders.

My Grandfather, Roy A. Crumrine. First Lieutenant here, in Europe and he's wearing a CIB, so gotta be late Summer of 1944. Metz was 7 September and he was a Captain by then, so this probably August, perhaps near Fontainbleau given the terrain in the background. He was commander of F Co, 2-10th Infantry Rgt., 5th Infantry Division. His Battalion Commander credited him with the fall of Metz.

He was born in Kansas and left school during the 6th grade to help his family during the depression. Migrated to the Chicago area doing all manner of jobs including playing AA baseball. After the war he returned to be a construction contractor and finish carpenter. He operated a Ford dealership for a time. Eventually he worked for his community in Illinois as Water and Sewer Commissioner. Retired to Florida in the 80's with my grandmother. Somewhere in there 6 kids, 15 grandchildren, 23 (and counting) great-grandchildren.

He passed in early 2001.

General John J Pershing aka "Black Jack"
Known to be a great leader early on but remained a Captain for years, do to crony system and senior members refusing to retire. Theodore Roosevelt once met Captain Pershing and said that he was going places. Quite some time later Roosevelt met Captain Pershing again and was startled to see he was still a Captain. Eventually, Captain Pershing was promoted. He led the forces in pursuit of Poncho Villa and led the US Expeditionary Force during WW I.

Other than the cliché family/friends that served I would have to go with CPT Boling and say LTG Moore as well as CSM Plumley. Two outstanding examples of dedicated soldiers and great leadership in the military. Also a shout out to COL Crandall who delivered them into the Ia Drang Valley and earned a Medal of Honor for going back to recover the wounded and deceased when the med evacs refused to return.

Too many in the real world to mention. But in fantasy world it would be Batman. Here's why. I truly believe Batman could be any of us and is what every man fighting for peace wishes he could be. Not Batman per say, but the ideals, determination and the willingness to do what is necessary to defeat evil in the world. To be an average man and have at your hands the tools, support, gadgets, and the ability to defeat evil is what we all strive for. And then of course, when we defeat the evil, we all fade into the populous and don't look for the recognition. We put on our other mask, if you will. Just saying.

My heroes are the men I served with in Vietnam. My heroes are the men we dropped off in a rice paddy. My heroes are the pilots I flew with. My heroes are the nurses and doctors that tried to save limbs and lives after we dropped off the wounded and dead. My heroes are the Americans that supported us in Vietnam. My heroes are the 58'000 plus lives on the Wall.

I'm stand next to my hero. He is my son SGT(P) Nick Wesson. He is a 15T Crew Chief and Master Gunner with 1st CAB, 1st ID. This is a picture of he and I at his graduation from Advanced Leader Course on the 6 Feb 2015 at Fort Eustis, VA. I'm sure that his Grand Pa Ben (CPT WWII 17th Airborne and 101st Airborne) and his Great Grand Pa Luke (1SG WWI 42nd ID) think of him in this way also!

My grandfather, SSgt Lelton H. Pittman. He was a WWII vet and served with the U.S. Arky 6th ID. Was promoted from PFC to SSgt in a battlefield promotion and served the remainder of the war at that rank leading a squad. He survived WWII and lived out a happy and fulfilling life. Unfortunately we lost him and Heaven gained a guard in 1999 before he ever got to meet my future wife or any of my kids. But we'll see him again one day, and I look forward to the reunion.

a hero looks like my father, Will R Browning who fought in Korea as a member of the 1st cav. 5th regiment. He still carries some fragments in his spine from one of the two purple hearts he earned. After the war he tried civilian life, but joined the USAF after a year.

Hated by many southerners but his mission was to finish of the logistical support of the south. Ending the Civil War sooner may have saved more lifes.

How many of you ever heard of Colonel Juan Nepemucene Seguin? Does his name sound familiar? It ought to: yes, the city of Seguin, Texas was named for this hero of the Texas revolution. Excerpt from Texas history:

Okay he is not in the military, nor his he great political or civil rights leader. He is short. But his guy grow up rough and has one of the best sense of humor in comedey today. My personal idol is a current service member, HM1 McPike (IDC/FMF/SW/AW). Very smart man. He has climbed through the ranks in a short amount of time and is a true expert in the field of medicine. My grandfather, PFC Lawrence Cassidy. He volunteered during WWII as he was exempt from the draft. He never met his youngest son, but my grandmother was comforted knowing he had received her letter with the picture of the infant; it was returned with his effects.
