Not knowing the specifics and the history of that region I couldn&#39;t offer much of an opinion, but in general, I would say China has been looking to assert itself in the region; much to the consternation of not just us but the major players in the region. So perhaps that is part of it. <br /><br />I doubt China is trying to provoke anything close to a full-scale war: the upsides don&#39;t outweigh the downsides. They may be the most powerful military in the region, but India does have a very formidable, modern military, and--at the extreme--a war with India would result in a Pyrrhic victory for China at best.
