Why did Biden call Putin a killer? Is the U.S. trying to instigate Russia?

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on March 18 that he and United States President Joe Biden should hold talks in coming days that would be broadcast live, after Biden said he thought the Russian leader was a killer and bilateral ties sank to a new post-Cold War low.

Putin, speaking on television earlier on March 18, scathingly responded to Biden's remarks with the comment that it takes one to know one.

Was this exchange of words between the two mightiest nations in the world necessary?

Strategic Messaging is a national power. I think what Biden is trying to say is Russia has practiced imperialism in Libya, Ukraine, and Syria with its military. Trump's strategic message about Russia was I don't know anything about Russia.

The issue with this situation is Biden was instrumental in the Cold War era and a prime critic of the Soviet Union as a way to alter his public perception. Biden is acting tough but should probably stop since he gets to sit behind a desk while we get to worry about what Russia will do.....

Need to look at the bigger picture. Biden is pretty much a China lover. So then the issue becomes messaging. You call Putin a killer so you can call Xi something less aggressive to "prove" he's being tough on China, wink, wink. Also, Biden needs to keep the Russia collusion and election interference alive, even though most of it is proven hoax. Remember it's always posturing to a narrative.

Probably not, wouldn't have been the way that I would have played it. Remember though, Putin and by default Russia is not a friend nor an ally in any sense of the meaning. Biden, assuming that he is thinking clearly will see Putin/Russia for what they are and really all about.

I think the President's remark was a gaff and current attempts to "stand by it" a mistake. Fact is, leaders of Nation states the prominence of Russia, China, the US, etc. are often required to make decisions that put lives at risk; decisions that end up with someone to "some many" being killed. We are quick to take the moral high ground in such matters given our purported inclination toward human rights and "all lives matter" ethos but there are many in the world we share who would claim hypocrisy. A little more diplomacy, a little more civility, please.

Because he (President Biden) doesn't want to be labeled as soft on Russia. What the general public fails to realize is that in diplomacy , words matter. You do not label another country's leader as a murderous dictator before you enter into negotiations, unless you think you can scare that leader. President Putin knows President Biden for the paper tiger he is. Putin need do nothing more than hold on for 4 years, maybe 8 and then the American public will most likely vote in another gutless wonder.

Russia is not a military superpower. If it weren't for an abundance of cheap energy resources and strategic minerals Russia wouldn't even has significant global influence. When Russia moved on Crimea, if we had armed the Ukrainians to the teeth and put military advisers on the ground, Putin would have backed down, or expended his political capital in a quagmire that would have eventually brought him down.
