But today's UAW has a swagger that it lacked just a couple years ago. It is now emerging from fresh wins in the fall of last year, when the union led a historic strike against the Big Three automakers in Detroit and won big successes at the bargaining table: pay increases of at least 25% over the course of the four-year contract — with a doubling of pay for some newer workers and temps — plus cost-of-living adjustments.

Hopefully they, unlike so many of us, learn from history. The unions were strong and saw their numbers wain as they began to abuse their power. There was a business in my hometown that argued that union demands were too much and would ruin their business by making them noncompetitive. The union went on strike. The strike was ugly with tires slashed and individuals threatened. Finally they got their demands met and, sure enough, the company went out of business a couple years later. Responsible unions will assure their existence and the existence of business in the future

That's an hour down the road from me. From the beginning the Company has been trying to get a collective bargaining unit instituted in the plant. It's easier for them to deal with the workers when there is a Union. The company expects the Union to police itself and handle the grievance process.
