The Vietnam War was fought largely by draftees and some volunteers….50 years ago ….the culture and politics during that era divided the ranks …I was a volunteer but I sided with the draftees and their views but we were divided nevertheless and I think morale suffered …..your take …..

CPL Larry Frias Jr you really need a history lesson. The blacks that served were below the proportion of blacks in the US.

What do you mean “sided with”. No one in my unit or squad were divided on issues. We were there to protect each other first and foremost. We weren’t too interested in the politics. The only thing that concerned us was the attitude America had towards the military serving in Vietnam. You sound like you were probably in Vietnam during the 70’s as the war was winding down and our military had more time on their hands.
Good luck to you but please do t put words in people’s mouths that can’t be backed up.

CPL Larry Frias Jr - I was in A Co 1/27 for five weeks. I got separated from my unit on my first day in the field. My regular unit was A 2/12 out of DayuTieng.

I respectfully disagree - During the Vietnam War, about two-thirds of American troops volunteered, while the remaining one-third were selected for military service through the draft. This means that approximately 65% of soldiers serving in Vietnam were volunteers.
The ratio of volunteers to draftees was around 2:1 during this conflict. Although the draft system only accounts for 25% of the military force in combat zones, it influenced many young American men to volunteer for the armed forces to have more choices in their service.
Divided - The men I knew and know today who were in combat and close support were more concerned about each other and disliked the political garbage in the States. People like Hanoi Jane and John Kerry did much to stir the pot and create discord.

I had a few black guys in my squad. In 68 there was probably a lot more fighting going on than in the 70's. There was no real divisiveness. In that era there was a definite internal war between blacks and whites, but when you have to rely on each other for your life and theirs, devisevness did not rear it's ugly head. I cam from Canada in 1966 to enlist specifically to go to Vietnam. In Canada at that time we had no serious racial problems, so I came to the USA without any prejudices.
