I was hired long before LinkedIn or Facebook for that matter existed COL Mikel J. Burroughs. I use LinkedIn as way of staying in touch with old friend and business and military contacts and making new ones.
I concur Sherry El Dora Trinity's response.

My current position was the result of a corporate headhunter finding my profile on LinkedIn. Guess I have a pretty good profile.

SrA Edward Vong Thanks for sharing that with the RP Nation. Service Members transitioning need to hear that. You need everything at your disposal these days to get recognized and more and more many of the job boards have a direct link to your LinkedIn profile and that is what is building out your application. Make it look good!

An issue that we as veterans have is "honesty" and in the corporate world, that can kill. I never lied on interviews or my resume, however I focus more on smaller functions and was able to expand it for the job I was applying for. I feel that for the most part, every job can be learned rather than listing your skillet, I had the approach of building my character and focusing on skills that may apply to whatever job I'm applying for.
This was not taught in TAPs or any other separation programs and may be considered frowned upon in the military community. Keep in mind, we no longer serve at this point and it works. Think like a politician.

The article was ok but very generic. Yes be unique is true, but here is my top tips
1) the best way to get found is go out and fish for your target market.
Do a search of people in your area who you think would make a good client or power partner
2) Also when I get a business card(s) at events I instantly look them up and from them on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. So I have several ways to tap and touch you so you can get to know me and I get to know you.
3) when they accept I send them a short message saying hi nice to meet you. I don't pitch nothing at that time. You will drive people away. When you have something good then share slowly , build repore.
In 6 months I grew my connections on linked in By 1,500 people.
