Most at or near my age (late 70s) on here will recognize the comedian. Few, however, will know this about his earlier life. I certainly did not. From the article:

Don Adams, the American comic actor and comedian who gained worldwide fame and three Emmy Awards starring as Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, in the classic television comedy Get Smart joined the U.S. Marines in the early days of World War II. He saw combat in the invasion of Guadalcanal and was the only survivor of his platoon. He contracted blackwater fever and nearly died, remaining hospitalized for more than a year. After his recovery he served as a drill instructor.

You're right, I did not know that about him. Hollywood used to be full of brave and honorable men.

LTC Thomas (Tom) Jones I knew Don Adams was in the Marines but never knew he was a drill instructor. Semper Fi Brother Don.

It's hard to reconcile that beaming Barney Fife, with a Marine DI during WWII! In Modern times, not many folks realize that Drew Carry was a Marine Gunny. And Greg Hahn was a Marine Captain before he started his Comedy Career. And don't forget Ed McMahon either.

I visited "Mayberry" as it was my Wife's favorite show. He wasn't the only Hero in that ensemble. The Lady who played the Aunt was a POW in Bataan, and forced to Nurse Japanese wounded. And Jonathan Winters, well what happened to him out in the Pacific, is horrific. No wonder so many of them drank. Yet they all made our lives brighter and better. God bless them all.
