Sounds like an NSI or ORI to me. These were common back in the SAC Cold War days, the wing got every flyable aircraft in the air or your final rating was downgraded.

I Was Also In SAC ~~ But Certainly NOT As A Pilot.
1961-1963 ~ Little Rock Air Force Base; Jacksonville, Arkansas
I Was Assigned To Various Projects; Perhaps Even As A Door-Stop.
But When Those B-52 & The F-102's Took Off The Ground~~
What A THRILL I Got: "I'm Part Of The USAF, In A SAC Unit, And THAT's US"
