Military Experiences

May 1969 - Jul 1970
Leading Radarman
In charge of erecting a 46 aluminum tower for our radar antenna on coastal site or the deck of an LST. We were to detect any threat to a landing operation using our radar and sonar bouys set up in the water. Spent six months in Saesbo, Japan from February to July, 1970. Went to Hong Kong on an LST in June as well as being on a landing operation in South Korea the same month.
Apr 1968 - Mar 1969
Radarman Second Class
Radio operator for the River Patrol Boats on patrol in the Mekong Delta rivers. Ended up in charge of all the radio operators in the command center for Operation Giant Slingshot. A very successful operation against the enemy supply chain into South Vietnam. Personally handed over 800 fire fights on the radio with our boats. Even one of our radio operators was wounded in combat.
Jul 1965 - Feb 1968
Radarman Second Class
Leading Radarman onboard ship. Stood nighttime radar watches while underway. Came onboard as a Seaman (E-3) and left as a Second Class Petty Officer (E-5). One of the duties of our ship was to tow targets for other ships to shoot at. An extremely dangerous task. Nearly sunk by a destroyer firing five five inch guns. Water was showered down onto our fantail from a near miss by five rounds.
