Military Experiences

Jun 1997 - Apr 2004
M1 Armor Crewman
A Co. 1/131 AR 35th Div I became a tanker. A great unit though undermanned. Trying to get local guys to show was hard while trying to get guys who lived 100-200 miles away was worse. I was one of them. I owned a business, lived 100 miles away, and had one car. But if I couldn't make it to drill I tried to make it up locally or when the unit needed manning for special assignments like the Lockheed Martin Counter Battery test at Redstone. Then 9/11. Filled out the paperwork and extended my ETS. The unit was activated minus me. I made a call and was on my way to Fort Rucker. I have bad knees but I made the PT, the road marches, the security details, map and compass courses, and 16 hour days. We were assigned to Redstone. I requested Anniston Army Depot. I got there and did my job.
Oct 1995 - Apr 1996
Security Police
117th Tactical Recon Wing I Drilled once with the 117th TRW but was told that due to lack of paid slots I could drill for points. As nice as the offer was Birmingham was 108 miles away and the wear and tear on my car would kill it though working with Phantoms would have been all too great, only days after this drill they started getting KC135's. In May of 1996 I received my honorable discharge from the Air Guard.
Nov 1987 - Sep 1995
Security Policeman
143rd WSF / 282nd CCS I decided to join the Air Guard after talking to a Security Police Officer at a mall showing off their equipment. I joined. Everyone was exceptionally nice and gracious. NCO's and Officers worked together. The senior NCO, a veteran of Vietnam (one of the first combat trained SPs sent to Vietnam) approached me and asked what I did in the Army. We talked for 2 hrs. I became the new ABGD trainer helping him. Later an AGR position opened and I became the Flight line Supervisor. I also got involved with the Drug Interdiction Mission with State, Local, and Federal authorities. Unfortunately things went downhill. The state went through a banking crisis. I lost everything. Not wanting to lose my clearance I transferred to the 282nd CCS. I became the unit Security NCO.
Feb 1987 - Oct 1987
Military Police Officer (MP)
A Co. 118th MP Co. Someone got the bright idea to transfer me to the 118th MP’s. The unit was moving they needed drivers. I was 1 of 4 that had a 5tn license. 5 months later I ask why I have not received pay. No answer. I call recruiting command. They fail me. I walk. I file a complaint with the AG. October of 87 I receive back pay. A few days later a Major calls. I will be attending AT as his driver. He gave me Sept, Oct, or Nov. I asked for dates in Sept. Not available. This went on until he says the 10th to the 25th of Nov. On the morning of the 10th at 5am my phone rang. It’s the major, yelling that I missed movement. I’m going to lose my rank and pay. "Sir, calm down and let me explain. My ETS is 4 Nov”. The major was arrested at Christmas shoplifting porn videos from a movie store.
