Selected as an augmentation instructor for the BFV NET Team (1/29th IN REGT, Fort Benning, GA.), responsible for transition training on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle; U-Coft Certified Instructor/Operator in JAN-98; Moved to Team Operations Sergeant in May-98 (1st National Guard soldier in history of NET); Served as operational hub for support elements of 49th AD during final phase of NET (JUN-SEP 98)

After my brief period of insanity as the Commo Sergeant, I transferred to the scout platoon. They had an NCO shortage, and had lost people while reorganization as part of the Cav. Having been a light infantry scout and also serving in mechanized infantry, I already knew most of the tasks. Next step: MOS reclassification to get the 19D MOS. At that time, the National Guard had not yet become the deployment force that it is today. There was still a "good old boy" system in effect in many places. Paperwork was often sloppy. In my case, the Readiness NCO either didn't review all my records, or else didn't care. My reclassification paperwork stated I had normal color vision, a prerequisite for becoming a Cav Scout. My red-green colorblindness wasn't caught until just before retiring. :-)

My primary deviation from the combat arms duty positions; For my first year in the Texas National Guard, I held a 31U20 (Commo Sergeant) position. It only took a few field exercises at the Battalion TOC for me to realize that grunt duty was much better. Was glad I hadn't gone through MOS transition yet...
