I may be speculating a bit here, but my guess is that the GoIZ in Baghdad didn't like that the Kurds were getting cozy with the US and had their own dedicated force to conduct operations and coordinate air strikes. They wanted their own version.

I see mission creep here. If we are committed to boots on the ground, and this recent deployment makes that clear, we might as well fully commit. 150 SF guys pack a punch but can still be overrun by a dedicated and coordinated attack. They need conventional guys there as well.
