The Marine Corps’ Ban On Hands In Pockets Centers Around The Possible Misuse Of A Semicolon

I was taught that Pockets were actually called Air Force Gloves ... which is why we SOLDIERS couldn't put our hands in our pockets. (tongue in cheek, of course)

The Army is a little more clear. Army Regulation 670-1 states, “While in uniform, personnel will not place their hands in their pockets, except momentarily to place or retrieve objects.”

The article is just stupid. First of all, the Marines are not misinterpreting their own uniform regulations. Maybe someone misused a semicolon in the writing of the uniform reg, but nobody's getting the interpretation wrong. Hands in pockets in uniform is unprofessional. All the services have the same rule. Secondly, since they are scrutinizing the reg so closely, how did they miss the fact that the very sentence in question clearly states that it is a list of "EXAMPLES of activities that detract from an appropriate military presence." Examples means it is not an all inclusive list of the activities that are banned while in uniform. They could have not even mentioned hands in pockets and it would still be banned because they have the right to use their good judgement.
