One year while on the Rifle Range at Quantico in January, I had a Marine who kept loosing his cold weather gear. So, with the connivance and approval of the Range Safety Officer, I found this Marine some pretty pink Hello Kitty gloves, watch cap and backpack for him to wear. Both the gloves and watch cap had clips to attach them to his Gortex. Needless to say, he never lost another piece of gear after that.

Basic training 1988 FLW. Mo. PVT got a piece of Juicy Fruit gum in the mail.. The first line in the letter said.." Here's the gum you asked for.. hope you don't get caught. DS had PVT gather his sleeping bag, E-tool Both canteens and a blanket.. Took us all down to the sand pit and had said PVT start digging in one corner.. after about 30 minutes of futile digging.. the DS had the PVT place the gum in the hole.. Then mound up the sand, put the blanket around it and then 2 canteens of water.. he slept beside his little mound for 3 days.. we would be marching and the DS would yell out.. GO WATER YOUR GUM.!! and the PVT would take off.. on the morning of the 4th day the DS had taken a tree branch and taped gum all over it.. Juicy Fruit, Spearmint, Big Red.. he said. "Oh, look PVT grew himself a Juicy Fruit tree.. he took a piece of gum and handed to the PVT... in hind sight.. The BEST piece of gum I have ever had... DS are a special sick breed... but got to love them.

SSG (Join to see) I really appreciate that story, here is my take on OLE Drill Sergeant and their influence on me and my life.
Dec 1989 - Mar 1990
Basic Trainee
C 3-22 FA, Basic Combat Training | Fort Sill, OK
Recruit: Conducted Basic Combat Training- getting a kick in the whole rear end.
A CIVILAN becomes a SOLDIER. Who knew 25 years and 3 days later, I would go to 6 combat deployments, serve in some of the finest units the United States Army could bestow on a Soldier. Most Ironically, Becoming a DRILL SERGEANT IN DECEMBER 2005 and serving at Sandhill, Fort Benning GA; with C/2-47 IN "Charlie Rock, Panther Battalion". I owe it all to my Drill Sergeants and a lot more gratitude. Thanks for training me to fight, win and survive and what the word BATTLE BUDDY MEANS. Yea, didn't know then, but boyee did they watch my 6 and cover me while I moved (the U.S. Soldier).
