The combat arms specialties are open to all genders so by all means apply, get trained and don't complain to much when you see the reality of these specialties. It is a though road ahead of those who want to be in the Infantry or maneuver specialties. Just always remember to thank your recruiter he or she put you there so "embrace the suck "

As much as it was impressive when women first passed Ranger School, BUD/S is a whole other animal. I don't see this going well for any involved - the brass who want to see women winning and being accepted won't, the SEALs who would never willingly compromise their standards will, and the women who want a fair shot at making it won't be given that opportunity, but will instead be phased into the community in such ways as to be outcasts.
This is a bad idea.

No worse an idea than women training to be Rangers. This is a completely different animal, but in today's PC military it has to be offered. Women signing up for the torture, is another thing. I'll be surprised if any women sign up.

I know some women who would've signed up years ago when we were that age, that's not the concern I've found.

The Navy has already been doing the same standards thing for over 20 years. When the Congress removed the exemption for women on Combat Ships, Combat Pilots and Combat Support and Service Support elements. The Navy Special Programs have allowed them to try and join and pass if they whish. It took over 8 years for one to be EOD certified and 12 years for UCT and I am not sure about SAR, and Dive Salvage Units. They do not relax any standards if a Male does it the Female will preform the task no exceptions. The other thing I would add is they were able to keep all of the failures and passes quit for a while so it was no big deal when they were operating.

Riverine a combat qualified unit has had women for over 3 years not many passed but they have had them for a while and are trained in offensive Combat tactics. We have had them in Bees for the same time there were problems and still is, but have had some preform in combat supporting Marines and SOF and have done well and a couple of Combat V's with CAR's. The Navy is using those standards for the BUDS process. I think if it stays on the down low it will be hard for one to ever pass. The other thing is how many will want to do that I would say less then .03% but the problem is we are saying they can not, so what happens when you tell a kid he can not do something they do it that is the big problem I see. You have to want to be an operator to be an operator not just to do it because someone says you can't. This is what BUDS was designed for you have to want it for you and to be a part of a very special Team. Another note is Navy EOD is Special Operations Capable and work with other Special Operations units and use to belong to NSW but are no longer with NSW they fall under NECC.

Maybe we'll see a female make it one day, on her own.

SGT (Join to see) - Maybe. I just want them to actually want to do it because they want to be a SEAL not just because everyone says they can't then when or if they get to Team they don't decide that it is something they don't want to do. That is the hole thing with BUDS they try to make it if you are in it just for the PEN then they don't want you. I think the Navy will do the right thing.

I do too CPO (Join to see). That was my thoughts also. If they want it because that's how they feel, and not because how someone else feels.
