Understand children? My parents had PhD's in understanding a child's mind. Get the strap or belt, go outside and bring me a switch (you brought in a dead twig, they go out and bring in the entire tree), get your father, get your mother, gimmie that, and a myriad of other catch phrases that let you know you're about to become one with pain. Time out, was AFTER they got done and asked "do you want me to give you something to cry for" or "take your ass to your room". It was never fast enough, and round two would commence. You KNOW it's been a bad session when your fathers sweating. I've had my ass warmed up, beat, tenderized, jumping all over the place, whatever you could imagine. But I've NEVER been to jail, done ANY bids, or been in ANY real trouble that a stiff fine couldn't be paid or community service didn't take care of. I finished HS, did some college, served in the Army (ok I admit being in the Army will lead to a few additional ass whoopins on paper, you wish were just physical). So somehow all those whoopins I took worked on some level.

Haha, this is so awesome because that's what I went through too. But to honestly it does help to instill discipline at home, and I think it's becoming a lost art.

Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth - Didn't go through G-ma, but G-pa handled his business when I showed out. He did not care where or who's feelings were hurt...especially mine.

I am pro spanking. I will not negotiate with my child, if he wants to act disrespectful and throw tantrums then he pays the consequences of getting a spanking.

SPC(P) (Join to see) Agree completely a child is exactly that -- a child-- and a parent who disciplines their child gives the child a sense of security until they are mature enough to make decisions and take responsibility for themselves.

yep. I made it very clear to my kids when they were very young that I was the boss and "my house, my rules". If you don't like it, get a job and move out. lol
Oldest son is a contractor for the feds, currently in Afghanistan making $1000/day. Daughter is an Iraq vet now working as FSO for University of Alabama, Huntsville. Middle son playing football for Troy University and youngest is in JROTC in HS. None of them have ever been in jail. ;)
