I remember when the coolest reason people joined AAA was so that when you went on a trip, you would get their trip tik package. Let's say you were going from NC to CA. They would give you a map of the US with your route in highlighter. Then you got the triptik which was a series of smaller scale maps that showed more detail. And finally you got paperback books that had motel and interesting sights to see along your route. Back then, there really was nothing like it. Now you can get all that for free on your phone, with realtime traffic updates.

AAA is still doing that, six months ago I used AAA and their maps, trip ticket packet for a weekend trip, came in handy too where the phone had no signals.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell One of my favorite things. Map reading! What are they going to do if they can't use their GPS.

map reading is a necessary skill, my wife cannot read a map despite my attempts to help her learn. She does now help me encourage our boys to learn map reading. They now take turns navigating on road trips.

That's a great way of getting them interested and teaching a valuable skill.

As long as you've got your compass and a map, you should always be able to find your way home...even if you couldn't find your way to your original destination! I've found this true all over the world. I've never been "lost," just didn't know where I was at the moment.
