What the heck, it would have cost AT LEAST that much to take Apple to court (with no absolute guarantee of winning).

To put the dispute into a clearer perspective, the situation is analogous to the government going to court because it THINKS that there MIGHT be a CLUE that COULD help it solve a crime buried in my backyard and getting a court order compelling ME to dig up MY own backyard at MY own expense and for ME to bear the full cost of whatever damage the government (and the courts) have forced ME to do to MY PROPERTY at MY expense.

PS - What do you want to bet that the hacker made sure that they hadn't sold the FBI the exclusive rights to the hack? What do you think that Apple is paying to get a copy of the hack?

Capitalism trumps Patriotism, again. Comey said the results were worth it. Wonder ti these guys are available to help out with the Email scandal? Seems to be working through the system at a snail's pace. Why would that be?

MCPO Roger Collins - Master Chief; I can think of two very sound reasons that DON'T require a conspiracy theory:

[1] the government prosecutors want to be VERY sure that they have a case that will stick - even in the face of the best defence that money can buy;

or

[2] the government prosecutors are turning over ever smaller rocks looking for something that simply isn't there.

And they will continue doing so until the day she takes on the biggest job in the world, the US Presidency. The FBI can say my skirts are clean, I passed the referral on to the DOJ and the DOJ will say exactly what you note as item 1&2 again. Whether she becomes President or not, deals will be cut, as with Sandy Berger and many others and they will find an excuse to forgive her. OR if elected, the whole thing goes away. Sure would be fun to see how Trump would manage this if he becomes the next President.

MCPO Roger Collins - Master Chief; I know that it's a bit redundant, but I'm a bit too "old school" to change. I don't mind if others have different formats. (On the other hand, I do find that making sure that I'm "formally polite" keeps my [sometimes] instinctive desire to be scathingly blunt in check.)

Agreed, and that is why we need to have hackers that can live in their hacker heaven places and get huge bonuses like SF, Doctors, and Fighter Pilots do.

LTC (Join to see) - Major; Considering the amount of "fun" a hacker can have as an "independent", $1.3M per job IS "competitive".

Hackers are NOT (generally) considered "team players" - at least once you reach the levels of the REALLY good ones.
