April 20th 1989, USS Iowa created some sad history. On this day the center gun on Turret Number two exploded killing 47 sailors.
I love these old ladies. I find it sad that Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin are reduced to museum duty. They were majestic ships. Masters of the sea, and the ultimate projection of power in their time.

Actually the accident in turret two occurred on April 19th, 1989 not the 20th.
Every year we hold a memorial service where shipmates and family members of those who were killed come together to remember them.
