SSG Robert Webster I find it interesting that the EU is throwing this out there, when Turkey is a candidate as opposed to a member state. There rantings mean roughly jack shit in reality. There are no EU sanctions that can be imposed, no fines levied, the only real "threat" they can make against Turkey is that they will not be allowed to join.
That being said Erdogan is a candy ass who takes criticism, mockery, and any other form of negativity poorly. He is an extremely thin skinned politician which in and of itself I find hilarious. I don't see this ending well. The first time was a failed coup. If he continues with his Love me or else attitude, the next time won't be a coup, it will be a presidential assassination. Like him or not, that is not a sound basis for governmental change.

Turkey has been a candidate forever... The main thing keeping them out of the EU has been their history of, and continued, human rights violations... Which is never going to change.

The middle-East is centuries, perhaps millennia, away from stability without one of two solutions:
1) a "Pax Romana" established by a strong-arm imperial power, most likely Russia, possibly Europe, (if the EU ever grew a set), or a Muslim Caliphate.
2) allow chaos to hold sway, allow existing countries to "Balkanize" into smaller ethnically and culturally homogeneous "_____-istans". with our support for friendly, popular liberation/independence movements. That support should be limited to defensive operations by the newly sovereign micro-countries.
