This was spoken about on the Adam Carolla show (Dr. Drew's long time partner). I'll paraphrase.
Drew's numbers weren't high enough to where he could speak with impunity. If he was making the company LOTS of money, he could say whatever he wanted, because NO ONE actually cares what his political leanings are, as long as it doesn't affect the almighty dollar.
"If" he makes a statement which runs counter to the "narrative" or "brand" the company wants to develop, they will cut him loose. It's really that simple.
No one was "gunning for him" based on a singular comment. His numbers just weren't there. Really that simple. Just like the Service. If you're a star performer, you get a little more slack when it comes to your mouth. If you aren't a star performer, your contract doesn't get renewed over what might seem "trivial."

SSG Carlos Madden - He wasn't generating Revenue. It's really that simple. He's an expert in his field (Physician & Addiction Medicine), but that doesn't mean much when he was contracted as an Entertainer.
