You don't know a damn thing about Parris Island other than what you have read in the media. Recruits of all ethnicities/religions have been going there for decades. I went through there with black, white, Hispanic, Asian as well as Christians, Jews, atheists and at least one muslim. The reality of Parris Island is it is intended to be hard and if they see weakness or inability to manage the circumstance they will pursue it. Their job is to weed out the folks that should not be there.

You do not earn the title by enlisting as you seem to think. You earn the title by marching across the parade deck with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor on your uniform. He was not a Marine until then. You cannot bestow the title, it is not yours to give. There is no bravery required to sign a piece of paper, don't kid yourself.

While it is tragic he killed himself, no one wants it to end that way, it happens there. Many more try and fail to do so. You are a typical whiner and non hacker that wants to sit back and critique others doing something you would never be able to do, make Marines. Go back to your hole in the ground.

Odd. Marine boot camp (the phrase universally used by Marines) was 8 weeks long in 1968 under the "mobilization" regulations that compressed the training cycle due the the manpower needs in Vietnam. Some classroom trading was dropped and formal PT doubled to 2 X daily done in "boots and utes". Boot camp was similarly shortened during WW2 for the same reason. The last series at PISC to have 8 weeks was the 3300 series of 3rd Bn which picked up its first recruits in very late DEC 1969. Series numbers restarted at 100/200/300 annually on 1 JAN. The 100 series of 1st Bn 1970 had 9 weeks of formal trading after the series fully formed. By the end of 1973, boot camp had increased the length back to 12 weeks.
I entered boot camp 31 DEC 1969 and was assigned to Platoon 3301 graduating 11 MAR 1970. (The time over 8 weeks taken up by what it known as "forming" til the series is fully filled and the next training cycle starts.) By 22 DEC 1973, when I graduated DI School, boot camp was back to 12 weeks.

More on point, recruits are technically Marines in the sense that they have signed enlistment papers and by law have to be part of the Marine Corps to partake of the unique initiation rite know as boot camp. It is just this "initiation" sense hammered into every Marine that makes them bristle at any thought that gives the title Marine to ANYONE who hasn't successfully graduated boot camp. SSgt Terry P.

MSgt George Cater - I really don't know where you got your information, but i started basic in the Marines on Jan 4th 1968 and the cycle was 12 weeks plus the time spent in receiving barracks. i don't know anyone who only did 8 weeks in basic.

I'm so excited! Someone read a news report, made a decision about what happened and deemed it to be a racist, bigoted attack... Why even bother to have a trial. someone get this PFC to the bench; he has deemed himself Judge Jury and Executioner... So no need for a lengthy trial and you know legal rights of the accused. PFC said so, it must be true.

Wow... we can save so much money just putting PFC's in charge. Let them make all of the decisions and we don't need Officers, SNCO's, or NCO's anymore!

Yes, the guilty will be punished, but sorry, he did not earn the title Marine. By the way soldier, please stay in your own lane as you have NEVER walked our walk, or been down OUR path. You chose differently, good for you. I see some of my fellow Marines are already mounting a bayonet charge at you so I will not be labor them in that task. Please in the future consider your words as we take things a little more seriously than other Services. Semper Fi.

Mostly right, except for those who retire successfully and carry a DD FORM 2 (Retired) until their dying day. The orders one receives when transferred to the FMCR (20-30 yrs) or Retired List (30+ yrs) specifically note the you can be recalled to active duty at the needs of the Marine Corps - no end date. That's why our retired pay is sometimes, though rarely) called retainer pay. Just cause it very rarely happens doesn't change the meaning of the fact. Thus we retirees are still Marines in both senses.
