Fight Song: Army singer belts out beautiful tune despite PTSD

FORT LEE, Va. — Army Staff Sgt. Tierra Brown, 392nd Army Band, sang the national anthem to open the nationally televised CNN town hall here featuring President Barack Obama Sept. 28.
To the millions who tuned into the show focusing on veteran and military issues, she probably appeared to be just another Soldier singing the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
The vocalist, however, was more than another military member honoring the nation’s heritage. She is among the roughly 10-percent of those who served tours in Southwest Asia and are afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

After a trauma or life-threatening event, it is common to have reactions such as upsetting memories of the event, increased jumpiness, or trouble sleeping. If these reactions do not go away or if they get worse, you may have Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Sgt Gus Laskaris - Do you, or have you ever had PTS or PTSD? If not, you wouldn't understand. She's heroic for coming out of her shell to sing in public. I have a good voice but I'll never sing in public. I don't have the guts to. I won't put myself in a position to possibly embarrass myself, like she did. I don't understand the shaved head, but there's got to be a reason got it. What kind of doctor are you? I only have a knee "jerk" reaction when I'm trying to explain something with one.

Sgt Gus Laskaris - Since you've never been in combat, and seen what a person can do to another person, when you're only 18 or 19 years old, you wouldn't understand the trauma endured day in and day out, 365 days a year. Seeing horrible things post daily isn't the same as seeing horrible things close up and personal. Don't the horrible things you see daily have any affect on you? I'm sure it does, but you're like so many men who say it doesn't, and therefore can't understand why other men and women do. I've seen a few of my dead friends feel like that, and then one day, boom, it's all over. I've struggled with it for 51 years now, and I'm not going to allow anyone, who doesn't know what it's like, to judge me or anyone else being treated for it. The lady singing was a way for her to get past another day in a 365 day year. It doesn't affect you one day and not the next. It's every damned day. If I were not being treated, I would still be a drunk trying to figure out what's gone wrong in my life to cause me to be that way. No matter what I write to you, you have your mind made up, and that's really sad. I don't see how you can help anyone with a serious problem, thinking the way you do.

Okay, So please tell me why this soldier has a shaved head in violation of AR 670-1?
Specifically para 3.2a (3) Female Hair; Short hair is defined as a hair length that extends no more than 1 inch from the scalp (excluding bangs). Hair may be no shorter than 1/4 inch from the scalp (unless due to medical conditions or injury). And no , just being in the Army Band does not give you a pass on conforming with regulations. Am I the only one who sees this as an issue? Army Leaders WTFO? Semper Fi.

I noticed it also. Thought is was strange she has no hair on her head. Maybe she had cancer. I dunno MGySgt James Forward.
