Maj Kim Patterson different people at different times of my life. At present I pick my wife and best friend. Short story- diagnosed with Stage III Breast Cancer in 2010 just after her 40th birthday. She had several surgeries, 6 months of intense chemo, and a month of radiation that lasted over a year of time and the follow ups over the next 4 years to her 5th anniversary- the one where they tell you that you are in the clear going forward. So what did I learn you might ask. Dignity- how to carry yourself when you are close to death and feel worse. How to deal with the stares when you lose your hair and your body is instantly aged 40 years. Humility- for the reason just listed as well. She always found a way to laugh about the tests, tubes, needles, sickness, baldness, etc. I learned what fear of the unknown might look like. She also taught me to enjoy each day- love where you are- and be appreciative that you woke up this morning. I can only give you one thumbs up on this Major- but it deserves may more as it reminds us during the holiday season what makes us who we are.
