Cpl Joshua Caldwell the headline is inflammatory. The actual words said, less so. I will say this, I would expect Abe to apologize for Pearl Harbor, no more than I would expect our President to apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These were horrible history defining moments. They were also acts of war, committed during a time of war. Abe coming to Pearl Harbor is not a bad thing. It is a world leader visiting the spot that was either tragedy or victory depending upon which side you were. I don't know what personal bitterness that the press secretary is talking about. I have seen numerous occasions in which Pearl Harbor Survivors have met with their Japanese counterparts. Every time I have seen it, it is mutual respect one warrior to another. It is not bitterness. It is a strange comaraderie that exists despite the events of December 7th 1941. No apologies are required for acts of war committed during a time of war. Apologies come when atrocities are committed during a time of war, under the guise of being legitimate war tactics. IF Mr. Abe wants to apologize for something how about the Bataan Death March.

It's the comment that veterans should just "get over" their bitterness, what our men and women suffered at the hands of a brutal enemy ain't to just be "gotten over". Accept a visit from their leader as they've accepted visits from ours...sure, but "get over it", I find that comment misguided.

Your comments about Japanese and Allied vets getting along for the most part are true. Also, Japan *DID* apologize for the Bataan Death March and also the British/Australian rail road building ("Bridge On The River Kwai").

PO3 Steven Sherrill Well said.

Not that American lives don't matter...but you need to remember we were all at war...and many countries did a whole lot of bad stuff...HOWEVER...the bombing on Pearl Harbor was strictly a Military attack...to destroy the navy fleet and airplanes there...its is truly awful that 2400 soldiers and some civilians were killed....but we went to Japan with bombs...ATOMIC bombs and Killed HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of INNOCENT Women and Children...fire bombed Tokyo and killed THOUSANDS of more Japanese MOSTLY women and Children...War is war....but it's NOT right for the US to hold such a grudge...Hundreds of thousands of Japanese CIVILIAN citizens were killed...murdered...and with those bombs....its was HORRIFIC! I cannot even begin to describe to you what it did to people...what it does to your skin...how it melts your body from the inside out...it was BARBARIC... Does this not make us the same as them?

“And so, yes, there may be some who feel personally embittered,” he added. “But I’m confident that many will set aside their own personal bitterness, not because they’re personally satisfied by the words of the Prime Minister, but because they recognize how important this moment is for the United States.”
Damn clickbait headline.

Misleading (deceptive) headline is misleading.

Here's the actual quote:
“But I’m confident that many will set aside their own personal bitterness, not because they’re personally satisfied by the words of the Prime Minister, but because they recognize how important this moment is for the United States.”
