I remember there were multiple times they have made this claim. They state that is is more of a pride thing than a supremacy thing.
I've actually spoken to a KKK member before, he stated that he preferred to keep the white race pure and European and not mixed with anything else. I asked why, and he stated that pure is better and compared us to dog breeds. My thing with this is why just white? Shouldn't one keep their whole heritage "pure"? Italian, Irish, English, Chinese, Thai, Dothraki, Klingon....
It was a very calm but unintelligent conversation.

We can be Irish, or Chinese, or West African, or Slavic... however what does it mean to be white, or black, or brown? Those labels were created to not to celebrate any specific cultural heritage, but to divide people and give some of them privileges that were withheld from other groups. The term "white race" or "white people" wasn't even a thing until the late 17th Century and has its roots in slavery based on race in the European colonies.

I have a problem with the author of this article. He is trying to link the support of the KKK to Trumps victory. Stating that "Trump won with the public backing of the Klan, neo-Nazis and other white racists." While I am sure that they did support him, they are such a small fringe group that I can honestly say that I have never met one in person, at least not that I am aware of. So how does their support even matter in a nation of 300+ million people The article is an obvious attempt to tie all Trump supporters to these morons. Incidentally, their disconnect claiming that they are not white supremacists is just too stupid to comment on. Hillary probably had the support of some devil worshiping cult somewhere, you don't see the AP writing an article about that.

Only when a professed White supremacist that publicly states their support for Trump during the election and today, we should limit that particular support to that specific individual and group as they don't represent the entire base. As to how their support to Trump as members of the American population matters? It matters if elected leaders and other Americans don't denounce or hesitate to denounce them since perception of the masses is more important than perception of the fringe groups.
As for the actual premise by the author as to how some KKK members want to be labeled White separatists and not supremacists was both intriguing and disgusting.

They don't want to be labeled supremacists but either nationalists or separatists. Well that's an interesting argument by the folks that were interviewed. Doesn't change anything about the disgust I have for their ideology.
